The Community

The first library in Hudson, New Hampshire, dates back to 1797 with the establishment of the Nottingham West Social Library. In 1856, the Hudson Center Library opened under the stewardship of Eli Hamblett at his home on Hamblett Avenue. The Greeley Public Library, named for the family that donated hundreds of books, opened in 1894 at the home of George A.  Merrill on Maple Avenue and moved to the third floor of Webster Hall on the corner of Central and Ferry Streets in April 1895.

In 1904, Kimball Webster donated land at the corner of Ferry and Library Streets. Soon after, The Hills Memorial Library was constructed with funds donated by Dr. Alfred Hills in memory of his wife, Virginia. The Hills was dedicated in June 1909 and served the town for 100 years. It was declared to be a “model of its time” and is listed on both the National and New Hampshire Registers of Historic Places.

Faced with the lack of space to provide adequate services to a growing community, the Board of Trustees and Friends of the Library worked for over twenty-five years to expand library facilities. In 2007, two benefactors, G. Philip and Alvin Rodgers, donated four million dollars in memory of their parents, George H. and Ella M. Rodgers, to provide Hudson with a new library capable of meeting the needs of its growing community.

The new Rodgers Memorial Library (RML), constructed on town-owned land at 194 Derry Road, was dedicated in June 2009, exactly 100 years after the dedication of The Hills.

In addition to the buildings it has called home over the years, the library has updated its holdings, services, and infrastructure to evolve along with the needs of Hudson residents.

Information technology has been a driving force behind many changes. The COVID-19 pandemic further pushed many library services and programs to be made available over the Internet. Today, patrons can browse the library’s catalog and access many services online. RML provides free online access to digital books, audio books, periodicals, maps, streaming films, courses, and dozens of other resources. Patrons can access the Internet, scan documents, and access copiers and printers with their own devices or a library computer. Librarians offer assistance with using digital tools and navigating online services and forms.

RML has expanded patrons’ access to rapidly changing technologies. In addition to the in-house 3-D printer, patrons can borrow tools like smart speakers, digital cameras and scanners, a robotic vacuum cleaner, audio-visual equipment, or a mobile hotspot to connect to the Internet while they travel.

For many Hudson residents, RML has become a gateway for accessing other community services and institutions. These include free and discounted passes to museums and other regional cultural institutions, on-site access to public notaries and tax return assistance, as well as a robust portfolio of programs that inform, entertain, and encourage social connections.

Patrons also increasingly use RML for the physical space it offers to gather and socialize or to focus and work in a quiet space. The library’s reservable meeting and study rooms play host to social and hobby clubs, tutoring sessions, and other meetings of groups in the community.

Today, the breadth of RML’s free offerings have expanded considerably to include the services, resources, and programs described below.

Information, entertainment, and resources:

·      books (printed, electronic, audio, and digital audio)

·        periodicals (printed and electronic)

·        databases

·        DVDs, streaming movies, television shows, and music

·        online courses, educational aids, and language instruction

·        A Library of Things, including borrowable electronic items

·        access to shared materials from partner libraries - RML is a full member of GMILCS (Greater Manchester Integrated Library Consortial System)

Community services and tools:

  • computers and Internet access
  • copy, scan, print, and fax capabilities
  • notary public
  • tax preparation assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program

Space and opportunities to explore ideas:

  • educational and social programs for patrons of all ages
  • activities and events open to the whole community
  • meeting spaces for groups
  • study rooms and quiet areas for individual work, reading, and reflection

Hudson residents place a high value on the RML’s adaptability, variety of offerings, welcoming atmosphere, and commitment to making knowledge available for free. They consider the library a “gem” of the community, an outstanding resource, and a positive contributor to patrons’ mental health.
