Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under the indirect supervision of a section or branch supervisor as delegated by the authority of the Library Board and in concert with the executive direction of the Mayor to the City Administrator to the Administrator of Public Library Services to an Assistant Administrator to perform a variety of moderately complex clerical functions pertaining to library work; to perform related duties as required. The employee has access to confidential patron records.The inability to perform the requirements of the position could result in delay of service, monetary loss or expenditure of time by other employees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work involves providing efficient service to the people of the City for a variety of moderately complex clerical functions pertaining to library work; to be responsible for conformance to city and state codes and standards of all work performed under his/her direction and to conform to policies and directives promulgated by the Administrator of Library Services; to coordinate the work for which s/he is assigned; this work is performed with some latitude in independent judgment and decision making and under indirect supervision; performs related work as assigned by the Administrator of Public Library Services.


• Provides reader advisor functions, i.e. recommends books and other materials to patrons;
• Reserves museum passes for patron use;

• May enter into database simple descriptive cataloging of a non-original nature for fiction or other
library material;
• Instructs patrons in the use of the database and in location of library materials: assist with finding
and retrieving same;
• May verify and prepare orders for the acquisition of library materials;
• Operates library equipment used in public programming;
• May prepare lists of new materials received by the library;
• May repair damaged books, equipment and other library materials;
• Verifies bibliographic information for patrons or for interlibrary/intranet work loan purposes.
• Answers simple reference questions; refers complex inquiries to Library Assistant I or Section Head;
May also engage in the following activities:
• Using a computer performs general clerical functions pertaining to registration, over dues, mailings,
database maintenance, orders, interlibrary/intranet work loans, periodicals, etc;
• Maintains departmental files and periodical displays;
• Performs a variety of tasks pertaining to patron service such as issuing registrations, performing
circulation activities, etc;
• Prepares library displays; books, display cases, program, etc;
• Receives fines and other fees;
• Retrieves books from stacks
• Occasionally required to attend off-site meetings and training
• Assists in preparation of library programs;
• Answers telephone and responds to general questions regarding library services;
• Refers telephone requests to appropriate departments;
• Refers complaints from the general public to Library Assistant I or Section Head
• Shelves books and maintains general order of library materials;
• Instructs public in use of library equipment such as copy machine, , computerized catalog, electronic
devices, and basic computer technology, etc.;
• Maintains supplies and keeps printer operational and reports malfunctions to Library Assistant I or
Section Head;
• Distributes departmental mail;
• Is responsible for the physical processing of library material for circulation and use including
covering books, producing labels, bar-coding, etc.;
• Links items to bibliographic records already in database;
• Knowledge of Dewey Decimal classification system, library shelf work and basic library practices.
• Ability to learn filing order in classification system, to recognize need for shelving changes;
• Ability to cover in different departments and/or branches as needed
• Performs all opening/closing procedures
• Performs related tasks as assigned;
