The Grand Marais Public Library is seeking a creative, community-oriented Librarian I to join our team. With an emphasis on youth services, this position plays a vital role in promoting early literacy and lifelong learning by providing inclusive, engaging library services for children and teens (ages 0–18), as well as their caregivers, educators, and families.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Librarian I supports the successful operation of the library by performing a broad range of professional library services. Responsibilities include providing direct public service at the front desk; developing and facilitating programs; selecting and purchasing materials for the collection; maintaining the library’s social media platforms; creating publicity and marketing materials; and classifying and cataloging library materials within the assigned focus area—youth services.
All Librarian I staff contribute to shared library operations and may support services outside their primary focus area as needed to ensure continuity of service during staff absences, turnover, and recurring programs.
The starting wage for this position is $24.37, as established by the collective bargaining agreement and applied consistently to employees in this classification. The wage increases to $25.72 after 1,040 hours (approximately six months).

b) HRA – Employer will contribute up to an additional $1,550/Single or $3,200/Family for eligible Blue Cross Blue Shield expenses.
c) Employee paid monthly health insurance premium: $170.79/Single $455.94/Family
d) Employee can contribute to H.S.A.
2) Life Insurance: The City will provide $30,000 term life insurance. Employee has the option to purchase additional coverage.
3) PERA (Public Employees Retirement Association): 6.5% Employee/7.5% City Contribution.
4) Can contribute to a Deferred Comp Plan if you choose – 100% employee paid.
5) Holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, Labor Day, Indigenous Peoples Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving, Veteran’s Day, Christmas Day, 2 Personal Days.
6) Sick Leave accrues at 2.87 hours per payperiod.
7) ESST Leave accrues at 2.67 hours per payperiod.

Minimum Requirements
1. Bachelor’s Degree
2. One year of experience working with the public
Desirable Training and Experience
Professional experience as a children’s or youth services librarian, or transferable experience in child-focused education and programming. Experience working in a public library environment; high level of computer and digital literacy; experience working with youth and families; and experience classifying and cataloging library materials.
