Job Description

Job Summary

The Youth Services Manager will provide leadership for and manage staff and operations related to youth services at Vancouver Community Library, with a primary focus on the design, coordination, and delivery of high-quality youth and family programming. These services include, but are not limited to early learning, school-age, and teen programs; outreach and community-based programming; youth reference and reader’s advisory; and youth collection management in direct support of program goals. This position will work closely with the Branch Manager to plan, implement, and evaluate youth-focused programs; align collections and services to enhance program outcomes; and contribute to the overall management of the branch.

This position will also represent the branch and library district in youth-serving community spaces and will be central to building and sustaining strong relationships with children, teens, families, schools, and community partners through responsive, inclusive, and community-centered programming.

Essential Functions

  • Within the respective areas of responsibility, control, lead operational and budget planning; help monitor expenditure of staffing and operating costs of the branch and participate in strategic planning for the district.
  • Responsible for building and sustaining positive relationships with youth-serving service partners, schools, families, and community members.
  • Oversee branch youth engagement operations including responsibility for youth services staff, youth reference and reader’s advisory, youth and family programming, and youth collection management.
  • Supervise assigned staff and provide direction to other branch staff as needed; train, mentor, evaluate and provide performance feedback; address performance problems; interview and hire staff; establish and model customer service expectations for working with children, teens, and caregivers and ensure expectations are met.
  • Ensure coverage as needed by overseeing youth services schedules and, if necessary, deploying staff and resources to accomplish tasks.
  • Respond to patron problems and community concerns, seeking to resolve them and provide positive, developmentally appropriate outcomes.
  • Provide youth-focused reference and reader’s advisory assistance to patrons and caregivers; refer questions as needed; provide instruction regarding library catalog searching, computer use, technology, and use of personal information devices; troubleshoot problems.
  • Review and maintain youth collections to ensure they meet the needs of children, teens, families, and educators.
  • Coordinate local youth collection management in the context of a dynamic and centrally developed district collection.
  • Lead and collaborate with other branch staff to plan, coordinate, and implement youth programming for all ages, including early learning, school-age, teen, and district-wide programming initiatives.
  • Lead and attend meetings and participate in committees and organizations that further the library’s mission and goals related to youth engagement.
  • Keep informed of current youth services, library, and management practices by attending workshops and educational programs and reading specialized literature.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Duties are considered non-essential and include the following:

  • Participate in various committees, work groups, and task forces for library and community projects or initiatives related to youth services.
  • Compile statistics and prepare regular and special reports related to youth programming and engagement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of related public library experience, including youth services and programming.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of supervisory experience, with experience managing people and/or projects.

Supervision

This position reports to the Branch Manager. The position functions under limited supervision with guidance available and exercises considerable judgment to make and implement decisions.

The position directly supervises staff and provides direction as needed for other branch staff, including assigning work to others; scheduling staff; delegating work; training; hiring; disciplining; and mentoring.

 

Schedule & Location

The schedule for this position has not been finalized and will be determined based on operational needs. Once established, the schedule may be subject to change to meet the needs of the library.  

 

Compensation & Benefits

This position earns between $79,901.94 and $119,852.91 annually.  To be considered for a starting salary above the pay grade minimum, candidates must exceed the minimum experience requirements listed above.  

We have an excellent benefit package. FVRLibraries covers 90-95% of full-time employees’ health insurance premium cost and 90-100% of dental insurance premium costs.  In addition we provide employees with Life Insurance, AD&D and Long-Term Disability Insurance at no cost to the employee.  Employees have the ability to enroll in additional, voluntary life insurance, income protection plans, flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts.

Our employees enjoy 13 paid holidays throughout the year. Full time employees accrue 8 hours of sick leave per month.  The initial vacation leave accrual is 11 hours per month; this increases over time based on years of employment. We also offer other types of paid time off for situations such as jury duty, bereavement leave, inclement weather and more.
