Supervisor, Smoky Hill Library

Are you a steady, people-centered leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment? At Smoky Hill Library, you'll support a busy library serving a diverse community where adaptability, coordination, and clear communication are essential.

Arapahoe Libraries is seeking a Branch Supervisor to help lead daily library operations, support and mentor staff, and ensure welcoming, inclusive service for all community members. You'll balance hands-on leadership with shifting priorities to keep daily work moving forward.

About the Role

Smoky Hill Library serves a richly diverse community and is located near several local schools, making it a popular destination for youth and teens, as well as a welcoming place for residents from nearby assisted living centers. The area includes residential neighborhoods and local businesses, making the library a busy and well-used space for people of all ages. As a Supervisor, you will support daily library operations, work alongside staff, and help ensure the library meets community needs and district priorities.

Key Responsibilities

Operations

  • Support daily library operations by allocating resources, planning and prioritizing work, and making decisions that ensure the library functions smoothly.
  • Troubleshoot building and equipment issues and communicate with other library departments as needed.
  • Create monthly staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage and adjust as needed due to callouts or changing conditions.
  • Provide a minimum of four hours per week assisting patrons at a service point.
  • Support collection maintenance and materials handling as needed.

Supervision and Leadership

  • Recruit, interview, hire, and train staff to support successful onboarding and job performance.
  • Oversee scheduling, timekeeping, and daily supervision of employees.
  • Monitor employee performance, provide timely feedback, support professional development, and deliver evaluations.
  • Handle discipline and terminations in accordance with practice.
  • Lead by example by working alongside staff and providing guidance as needed.
  • Promote open communication, collaboration, and team building.
  • Work regular evening and weekend shifts and serve on call in crisis situations.
  • In collaboration with Library Managers and Librarians, assist with branch-level planning.

Customer and Community Relations

  • Promote positive working relationships with staff and patrons.
  • De-escalate and resolve concerns from patrons and employees by researching issues, identifying solutions, and making sound decisions.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community members, which may include outreach to community groups.

What You'll Bring

Leadership and Decision-Making: Two to four years successful supervisory experience with the ability to lead daily library operations, make sound decisions in real time, and support staff through shifting priorities in a busy environment.

Coaching and Staff Development: Experience mentoring and developing employees, providing clear expectations and feedback, and supporting accountability, growth, and consistent performance.

Communication and Collaboration: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to listen actively, communicate clearly, and work effectively with staff, peers, and leadership.

Adaptability and Presence: The ability to think on your feet, adjust plans quickly, and maintain a steady, grounded presence during busy or challenging situations.

Equity-Focused Perspective: Commitment to inclusivity, fairness, and working with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

Alignment to ALD Core ValuesDemonstrated collaboration, equity, and innovation in daily work.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Two years of similar or related experience, such as library service or customer service.
  • Two to four years successful supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop staff.
  • Experience teaching, training, or mentoring others.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to travel between facilities.
  • Intermediate technology skills using Microsoft 365 and the ability to learn new tools.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • One year of library experience.
  • Experience working with children and teens.
