Job Description

SUMMARY: Provides assistance and programming to library customers of all ages using research, communication and customer service skills and knowledge. Performs a wide variety of professional level services in support of the District’s goals and mission. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive. • Provides reference services to patrons of all ages. • Promotes use of materials using reader’s advisory skills. • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services. • Explains and assists in use of electronic and print resources. • Creates reference tools. • Implements programs under the guidelines of the Programming Team that aligns with District needs. • Conducts programming activities including children’s storytimes and teen programs as assigned. • Plans and directs or carries out special projects involving library promotion and outreach activity. • Works cooperatively with other staff, volunteers, and supervisors. • Serves as District representative/liaison to professional and community groups. • Plans and directs staff and public training programs. • Solicits funding and donations for library programs. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is responsible for the supervision of employee(s). Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: • Demonstrated knowledge of the Dewey classification system. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. • Ability to work with all age groups in a variety of formats. • Demonstrated positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, volunteers and community. • Ability to use word processing, database, photo editing, publishing and spreadsheet software. • Ability to effectively utilize electronic resources. • Ability to provide excellent customer service. • Ability to organize tasks and responsibilities and pay attention to accuracy and detail. EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university. Experience providing public library programming preferred. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Spanish language skills preferred. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to creatively problem-solve. Ability to negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive and flexible manner. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: None required.
