Job Description

Under general supervision, coordinates the development, placement, and check-in of the periodical collection following established procedures. Assists library patrons with information needs by using reference tools and procedures, including print and electronic sources at the public desk. 1. Manages and organizes the Library's physical magazine and newspaper collection, including coordination of weeding. 2. Maintains effective and cooperative working relationships with the subscription vendor and other direct accounts, overseeing quality control of subscription delivery, handling claims, and other issues. 3. Manages the workflow for checking in the periodical collection using the designated software for serial check in. Troubleshoots this software and instructs library staff in the use of the serial check in software and the organization of the periodical collection. 4. Updates catalog records for periodicals to ensure accuracy, complying with standards set by the Technical Services department. Keeps an updated list of the current periodicals and posts this in print and electronic format. 5. Actively promotes and seeks patron and staff feedback with regard to developing the periodical collection. 6. Provides materials for microfilming to the vendor and coordinates delivery of completed microfilms to the branch library. 7. Provides reference and research assistance to library patrons and staff; assists patrons with circulation and informational needs. 8. Understands and uses subscription databases and book collection in search of materials that meet the user's needs. 9. Possess a thorough understanding of the various formats and electronic delivery of periodical resources through direct online access and the library's databases. 10. Instructs patrons about Library procedures and the use of Library materials, including electronic databases and resources as well as the book collection, as needed to provide excellent customer service. 11. Communicates professionally in person, on the telephone, or by computer to conduct Library business as necessary. 12. Operates and troubleshoots office equipment including, but not limited to photocopiers and microfilm/fiche readers and printers. 13. Other: • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city. • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property. • Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies. Additional Info & Requirements

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience and at least two years library experience or experience in reference services. Interest, desire, and ability to communicate courteously and effectively with and provide services to others, including the public, both in person and by telephone. Excellent interpersonal skills. Willingness to take direction and learn a variety of tasks. Good organizational skills. Well-developed keyboard skills. Familiarity with personal computers and appropriate software. Adaptability and the desire to learn new resources quickly. Experience with data entry or electronic systems. Ability to work under minimal supervision. Willingness and flexibility to work a schedule that may include evenings and weekends. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS – In addition to the required minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Humanities or Literature. Experience with library subscription databases and Innovative Interfaces, Inc. automated system. Experience with Prospector, or other similar InnReach borrowing system. Knowledge of collection development. Ability to communicate in at least one language other than English, preferably Spanish.
