Job Description

Background Information: The customer is at the center of the work performed by Collection Services at the Denver Public Library. Denver boasts a diversity of age, background, religion, ethnicity, culture, education, socioeconomic level and lifestyle. Our collection responds to this diversity by treating each customer’s journey of discovery equally. Materials are available in a variety of formats without prejudice. When the Library does not buy a title, it attempts to borrow it. The vast majority of the Library’s use is from new and popular adult books, children’s materials, items in audio-visual and electronic formats and titles requested directly by users. Despite hour reductions and branch closures for renovation, the Denver Public Library circulated over 9 million items in 2010. Duties and Responsibilities: Leads Collection Services, consisting of Collection Development, Interlibrary Loan, Cataloging, and Processing to provide access to materials in all formats to Library customers. Oversees a collection budget exceeding $4,000,000. Upholds the philosophies which create and shape the unique collection while protecting it from societal and political pressures. Formulates and leads divisional strategic/ operational initiatives and budget in conjunction with the Director and other Managers. Guides the work of a creative team, which has reinvented collection development, technical services and resource sharing through the use of technology, vendor outsourcing, and streamlined processing. Creates and maintains strong relationships with the community, staff and vendors. Coordinates new opening day collections of $4,000,000 for two new branch libraries, opening in 2012 and 2013. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of publishing, resource sharing and library use trends. Knowledge and appreciation of popular culture. Skills in creative and critical thinking, budget analysis and development, team building, and strategic planning. Skills in vendor negotiation and project implementation. Ability to develop the Library’s mission, vision and values into successful strategic and operational initiatives. Ability to analyze and implement efficient workflows and systems. Ability to creatively problem-solve, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to model a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor. Ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to identify technological and other opportunities for increased efficiencies and improved customer service. Ability to bring energy and a sense of humor to the workplace. Ability and eagerness to experiment in radical ways. Ability to lead and motivate high productivity teams. Ability to foresee future trends and advance the positive reputation of the Denver Public Library. Special Requirements: A background and credit check must be passed after the offer to hire has been made.

Additional Info & Requirements

Five years of professional library experience, including two years in at least one of the following: collection development, interlibrary loan, acquisitions, cataloging, or processing. Two years supervisory and budgeting experience. Proven experience in strong fiscal management and leadership. Experience in the management of a collection of similar size and content in a public library strongly preferred. Experience with floating collections preferred. Spanish language skills preferred.
