Job Description

The Periodicals/Binding Assistant works under the direction of the Technical Services Librarian providing technical assistance in the organization and maintenance of periodicals, newspapers and government documents; builds computer records by utilizing the serials system of an online computer database (Lumen, Innovative Interfaces, Inc.); maintains daily records in LUMEN; checks in current periodicals; sets up binding records in the binding module of Lumen; pulls binding materials based on frequency and prepares materials for commercial bindery; supervises and trains student assistants; and performs varied clerical and receptionist tasks. The Periodicals/Binding Assistant receives, processes and checks in new periodicals and newspapers on the automated LUMEN serials control system by end of day of receipt to accurately track location of individual issues. Check-in includes locating the correct bibliographic record on the LUMEN computer system and building a new check-in grid if it is a new volume and annotating the grid with correct information. The Periodicals/Binding Assistant inputs pertinent publisher information for each new title of a periodical or newspaper into the management summary record of the serials system to establish control parameters (claiming periods, frequency, publisher or vendor addresses, order status, branch and copy status). This position inputs retrospective holdings of new titles to assist user in determining holdings of each title. This position prepares periodicals, books and government documents for binding and process (stamp, detection strip and check in bound volumes onto the serials summary holdings system); builds binding records in binding module of Lumen, including binding frequency, binds per volume, stamping, and binding color; and deletes holdings from grids. The Periodicals/Binding Assistant checks in and processes periodical microfiche and microfilm, inputting the initial holdings onto the serials control system, discarding paper copies of the corresponding periodical or newspaper and deleting holdings from grids; and ships discarded material to EBSCO's Missing Copy Bank. This position claims from publisher and vendors periodicals and government documents on a weekly basis that have not been received in order to maintain continuity of the subscriptions; and searches EBSCO's Missing Copy Bank for replacement issues.
