Job Description

The Library Assistant is responsible for duties related to Circulation, Reserves and Prospector; providing quality customer service via service desk, telephone and email to a multiage, multicultural clientele located world-wide; assuring all aspects of the Copyright Guidelines and Law are being met by the Institution; and maintaining the order of the building, including the closure of the library which includes cash management. The Library Assistant, Access Services trains, assigns work, and supervises student workers in the operation of circulation, shelving, cashier and Prospector; maintains the orderliness of the library which includes shelving and shifting of books, newspapers and periodicals; files microfiche and gathers books from the book drops; processes incoming requests received from students, staff, and faculty; screens and answers or refers inquiries, both in person and over the telephone, as appropriate; assists patrons with reference questions when reference librarian is busy or is not on duty; processes materials for electronic reserve system and regular reserves; provides oversight of the library during duty hours in the absence of the Dean, the Access Services Manager, Information Services Librarian, and Reference Librarian; instructs patrons on locating books, periodicals, and government documents on the on-line automated catalog; opens and closes library, preparing computers, Santo Collection and cash drawer accordingly; insures patron safety by identifying emergency situations and notifying authorities, notifying patrons and/or clearing the building as necessary when no reference librarian is on duty; monitors alarm systems for library collections and building security and communicates with security personnel when necessary; supports the Regis mission; and can competently use various computer systems, including Innovative Interfaces, EReserve, Microsoft Office and Prospector.

Additional Info & Requirements

A High school diploma and previous experience working with the public are required. The successful candidate will have evidence of excellent communication skills, both oral and written; the ability to maintain poise while effectively managing a multi-task operation; demonstrated ability to supervise student workers; ability to work effectively with a diverse clientele; and computer skills. Preferred candidates will have prior experience with a circulation module of an automated library system.
