Job Description

The Collection Development /ILL Librarian identifies and purchases appropriate materials including e-content materials for the PCCLD collection. This includes reviewing customer purchase and ILL requests, purchasing materials that are in high-demand, analyzing the collection for strengths and weaknesses and providing information to and receiving information from staff, principally the Branch Supervising Librarians, to facilitate decisions about selections. This position also performs deselection of materials from our physical collections. ▪▪ II. RELATIONSHIPS Works under the supervision of the Director of Technical Services and Collection Development and as a member of the Collection Development Team maintains the collection and oversees the ILL process. The work is performed drawing on professional skills with in-depth knowledge of public library principles. Works to promote a positive work environment by maintaining respectful interactions with team members, other libraries and provides excellent customer service. ▪▪ III. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Exercises lead role in overseeing collection development for materials by maintaining a thorough knowledge of books, authors, publishers and review media to insure selection of current and retrospective items required for a vibrant, timely, and comprehensive public library collection. Primary responsibility for selection of media materials for adult and juvenile, with secondary focus on digital materials. Expedites the purchases of materials that are in high demand or of short-term usefulness. Monitors materials budget and tracks progression of orders. Explains library regulations and procedures, and resolves basic patron complaints. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Technical Services and Collection Development. Responds to customer requests to purchase and ILL requests in a timely manner; reviews requests for consideration of purchase. Processes ILL requests for materials through Sirsi, performs searches for materials on various electronic databases (SWIFT, First Search, OCLC, etc.) and processes shipping and receiving of materials. Maintains ILL records, statistics and prepares reports. Provides excellent customer service by following up with ILL requests, provides status on orders, prepares notifications for material pick-up, issues fines for damaged or lost materials, explains library policies and resolves customer complaints. Networks with ILL departments of other libraries. ▪▪ IV. EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES RE¬QUIRED Education and Experience: Masters Degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association. Requires three years professional experience in libraries. Inter-Library Loan experience preferred. Skills and Abilities: Position requires in-depth knowledge of books, publishers, and collection development principles for a public library. Requires commitment to building and maintaining quality collections of materials that meet the reading interests and needs of the community and the understanding and application of usage statistics to evaluate the collection and meet changing demands of community library users to maintain a fresh, viable collection. Demonstrates ability to think and act appropriately under pressure and maintain a calm and professional demeanor. Demonstrates courtesy and interest in providing high quality service to customers and displays a positive image. Participates willingly as a team member: builds and maintains positive working relationships and contributes to a productive working environment. Ability to use independent judgment within procedural boundaries. Ability to function under flexible and changing conditions. Thorough knowledge of print and electronic reference tools and research techniques. Ability to use Internet and electronic databases. Ability to understand, accurately use a variety of software programs, including various databases and the library’s ILS system. Physical requirements include the ability to do repetitive work including hours of standing, bending, kneeling, shelving, pushing and pulling. Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds and push /pull a fully loaded book cart weighing up to 200 pounds. Equal Opportunity Employer.
