Job Description

The Clyfford Still Museum seeks an experienced Archivist for its collection of documents, photographs, books, personal effects, and other items relating to the American artist Clyfford Still. The collection also contains a small, non-circulating library that this position will oversee. This is a new collection, and the archival materials have not been catalogued, so experience with establishing a new archive is essential. Principal Duties and Responsibilities • Inspect, assess the condition of, survey and classify the museum’s archival materials. • Prepare descriptions of and all necessary cataloguing, indexing and other documentation relating to the museum’s existing and any acquired archival materials. • Write and code a detailed finding aid, including information on context and related collections as well as description of the materials. • Maintain records in accordance with best museum standards and practices to ensure the long-term preservation and easy retrieval of archival records. • Organize and oversee the permanent storage of archival materials. • Keep abreast of new technologies pertaining to electronic information storage. • Preserve, stabilize and restore archival materials as necessary. • Manage all communications with third parties relating to authenticity assessments of archival materials. • Assist curators with the histories relating to exhibited archival materials. • Work proactively at finding sources and acquiring items to enrich museum’s archival collections. • Work with the museum’s security staff in developing the best practices and technologies to secure and protect the museum’s archival materials. • Write and manage grants for archives and archival projects. • Assist with and support research and publication efforts relating to archival materials. • Assist with educational and public programs involving archival materials. • Assist with the museum’s promotional and informational literature. • Determine and acquire necessary archival supplies.
