Job Description

Position is located at Philip S. Miller Library, Castle Rock. Position serves Douglas County Libraries at multiple locations. Thank you. DESCRIPTION: The Server Administrator’s role is to design, install, administer, and optimize the Douglas County Libraries’ servers and related components to achieve high performance of the various business applications supported by tuning the servers as necessary. This includes ensuring the availability of client/server applications, configuring all new implementations, and developing processes and procedures for ongoing management of the server environment. Where applicable, the Server Administrator will assist in overseeing the physical security, integrity, and safety of the data center/server farm. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: •Manages servers – purchase, hardware installation (hardware and software), software installation (operating systems and applications), security, and workstation coordination. •Maintains server infrastructure – space planning, cabinets/racks, environmental systems, power, physical security, fire suppression, and cabling. •Coordinate and collaborate with network, application, and database administration functions to ensure availability, reliability and scalability of DCL servers to meet business demands. •Plans and implements strategies or methodologies for storage and access of the District’s digital assets, and ensuring that staff has secure access to their files from a central source or home directory. •Conduct risk assessments and business impact analyses to identify vulnerable areas within the Douglas County Libraries’ critical functions. •Recommend and implement disaster avoidance strategies and impact reduction strategies. •Develop and establish disaster recovery procedures for the restoration of mission-critical business applications in the event of natural disasters, technical failures, power outages, and human interference. •Coordinate and collaborate with network, application, database and system administration on all aspects of actual recovery plan implementation and efforts, including initial emergency response, recovery procedures, and business resumption processes. •Continually conduct simulations and test runs of system disruptions in order to revise and perfect plans. •Plans and implements strategies or methodologies where District desktop resources are secured through some kind of central access list. •Creates and maintains an automated method to update all public-access and staff workstations. •Investigates and applies patches and updates to all District servers. •Maintains a monthly accounting or report of server status – free disk space, critical events, and maintenance tasks accomplished. •Creates a server replacement plan – what servers require replacement, when, and the implications to District infrastructure. •Investigate, implement, and support server-based applications that supplant distributed desktops with server-centric clients. •Investigates and, when appropriate, introduces methodologies and products to reduce server Total Cost of Ownership. •Serves as the primary backup to the District's Network Administrator. The Server Administrator should be conversant with all support essential network systems. •Provides direct District internal customer support. •Supports miscellaneous IT projects, as assigned. •Creates positive experiences for library patrons by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks; presents a positive image of the library in attitude, communications and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas. •Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, co-workers, and volunteers. •Establish and implement policies, procedures, and technologies (including firewalls) to ensure server security. •Promotes DCL’s culture of safety by following library safety policy guidelines and safety rules. Practices effective personal and branch safety. •Performs other work duties as assigned. TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS: •Advanced knowledge of at least three of the following: W2K8, RedHat, Linux, Exchange, SQL, ILS, Proxy, Apache, Squid ASP or XML. •Knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public library service and extensive application support experience with Library Management Systems. •Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining all types of server hardware and associated network equipment, including SCSI, RAID, and I/O topology. •Specific knowledge of windows server platform(s) required, as well as strong working knowledge of enterprise relational database(s). •Familiarity with TCP/IP and network protocols, firewall management, and operating system configuration. •Working technical knowledge of scripting code using shell scripting tools. •General knowledge of storage technologies such as SAN or NAS, as well as Active Directory/Global Catalogue. •Proven knowledge of Datacenter Virtualization and Cloud Computing as well as desktop virtualization. •Ability to analyze, plan and implement server upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied patches. •A proven record of reliability, the ability to perform under time constraints, and good judgment under pressure. •Proven knowledge of project management methodologies and applications. •Ability to present clear and precise oral, graphic, and written reports. •Ability to convey technical information in terms that are understandable to any audience. •Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff, consultants, and contractors: strong customer service orientation. •Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in functions required to perform job duties, working effectively independently or as part of a team to complete tasks as assigned. •Must communicate effectively using English. Must read and write English at a level appropriate to the position. •Computer Skills: Must demonstrate proficiency in computer use including internet, email, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent). Keyboard skills required at an equivalent of typing 50 words per minute with minimal errors. Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties. •Physical Abilities: Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to: Support the technical requirements of a seven-day-a-week library. Work at computer workstations, repetitively for extended periods. Stand, walk, grasp, climb, bend, squat, kneel, crawl, work above the shoulder, and read a minimum 8 point font, regularly. Access and transport relevant materials or equipment up to 40 pounds, regularly. On a regular basis, tolerate residual smoke, dust, mold or foreign substances on materials. Occasionally, may work at heights up to 30 feet or in confined space.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is generally performed in an office and library environment, at computer workstations, on multiple tasks, equipment, software programs, and projects. Work requires constant sitting and computer work, moderate physical activity, close visual work; with regular proximity to automated handling equipment, regular exposure to moderate noise levels, residual dirt, dust, chemicals, mold or foreign substances and occasional high noise levels. Work involves extensive interaction with customers and staff, limited exposure to behavior issues; may require regular travel and transportation of materials or equipment. May require varied work hours, including weekends and evenings, which may change periodically. May require periodic 24/7 on-call duty rotations. Exempt Position
