Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Integrated Library System Administrator position is responsible for development, implementation, support and administration of the District’s integrated library system (ILS) supporting a variety of services including circulation, cataloging, acquisitions, serials, reports, external interface functions, and public access. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and initiative. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: •Configures and manages the efficient operation of the District’s ILS, including application performance, administration, maintenance, and upgrades to meet library requirements. •Researches, analyzes, evaluates, plans, tests, troubleshoots, designs, coordinates and implements all aspects of ILS interfaces and services. Documents and resolves system flaws. Tests and documents optimal practices. •Works with vendors for ongoing maintenance, development and support concerning features and functions the library requires to maintain or enhance service. •Maintains interfaces between the library's integrated library system and 3rd-party products, self-service checkout, computer reservation systems, and web-based applications that require authentication from the patron database. •Trains library staff to effectively use the system software. •Validates data integrity and backup systems to insure reliability of library system databases. •Monitors performance of applications and plans for future system changes, enhancements, testing, upgrades, capacity, functionality, and features. •Documents system maintenance requirements and procedures to handle system service loss. •Creates positive experiences for library patrons by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks; presents a positive image of the library in attitude, communications and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas. •Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, co-workers, and volunteers. •Stays current on DCL policies, processes, procedures and technologies required to perform work duties. •Promotes DCL’s culture of safety by following library safety policy guidelines and safety rules. Practices effective personal and branch safety. •Performs other work duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: •Thorough knowledge of ILS hardware and software with demonstrated ability to perform operational process analysis and translate into systems requirements and specifications is required. Must be able to identify and mitigate technology risk; •Working knowledge of automated library circulation systems including terminal and system printer installation and operation is required. •Knowledge of library catalog organization, indexing, and filing; standard library operating procedures and terminology, related specifically to patron registration and materials circulation is required. •Must be able to quickly learn operating systems, hardware, software and technical procedures using documentation, training, and customer service support. Must be able to provide understandable interpretations of procedures to end-users. •Must be able to analyze, research, and solve technical problems, using initiative and vendor technical support, and query the library’s database using the query language supported by the vendor. •Must be able to assess, organize, and resolve training needs and to explain complex technical procedures to staff and public with patience, thoroughness, and reinforcement. •Must have excellent project management, organizational, analytical, problem solving and decision making skills. Ability to supervise and schedule the work of others is preferred. •Exhibits expertise for a variety of technology products and services such as virtualization, messaging, storage technologies and web-based technologies. Must have a fundamental knowledge of all hardware (client, server, peripherals) of ILS product support vendors •Good knowledge of SIP-based third-party products, scripting languages, and other tools utilized to modify, maintain, and tailor existing products. Familiarity with selecting, installing and maintaining open-source software. •Training/experience with library cataloging practices and library practices and procedures (collections and technical services, circulation, reference, in-depth understanding of MARC formats, AACR2, etc.). •Requires demonstrated proficiency in server management including Linux/Unix administration, shell scripting, web and Java server administration, and Windows server management; and with relational database management systems (e.g. MySQL, Sybase, etc.) and relational database languages. •Proficient with application development and with at least two common web programming languages including Perl, PHP, Python, Java, and JavaScript is required. •Ability to conceptualize, define and implement interoperable information systems to support library needs. •Must be able to manage multiple projects concurrently, to set and meet deadlines and to adapt to new and changing situations, priorities and technologies. •Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in functions required to perform job duties, working effectively independently or as part of a team to complete tasks as assigned. •Must communicate effectively using English. Must read, write and understand English at a level appropriate to the position. •Computer Skills: Must demonstrate proficiency in computer use including internet, email, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent). Keyboard skills required at an equivalent of typing 50 words per minute with minimal errors. Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties. •Physical Abilities: Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to: Support the technical requirements of a seven-day-a-week library. Work at computer workstations, repetitively for extended periods. Stand, walk, grasp, climb, bend, squat, kneel, crawl, work above the shoulder, and read a minimum 8 point font, regularly. Access and transport relevant materials or equipment up to 40 pounds, regularly. On a regular basis, tolerate residual smoke, dust, mold or foreign substances on materials. Occasionally, may work at heights up to 30 feet or in confined space.

Additional Info & Requirements

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is generally performed in an office and library environment, at computer workstations, on multiple tasks, equipment, software programs, and projects. Work requires constant sitting and computer work, moderate physical activity, close visual work; with regular proximity to automated handling equipment, regular exposure to moderate noise levels, residual dirt, dust, chemicals, mold or foreign substances and occasional high noise levels. Work involves extensive interaction with customers and staff, limited exposure to behavior issues; may require regular travel and transportation of materials or equipment. May require varied work hours, including weekends and evenings, which may change periodically. May require periodic 24/7 on-call duty rotations.•Experience: A minimum three to five years of progressively responsible experience performing systems administration duties is required. Considerable experience working with enterprise library systems or related products is required. Significant scripting experience using advanced techniques, along with experience with database design, reporting, and management and client reporting applications is required. Public library experience with at least two years of automated information library system experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
