POSITION: Instructional Design Librarian PCN: 305075 Full-time, tenure-track, regular appointment w/ benefits LOCATION: Consortium Library University of Alaska Anchorage BENEFITS: Salary: minimum $66,000 annually; excellent benefits, including health and life insurance; tuition waiver benefits; represented by bargaining unit. Job Summary The Consortium Library invites applications for an Instructional Design Librarian. A new position, this librarian will play an essential role in the ongoing development and support of the Library’s instruction program. The successful candidate will blend the skill set of an academic librarian with an instructional designer’s ability to develop curriculum and incorporate instructional technologies into the teaching and learning process. The Instructional Design Librarian will employ expertise in learning theory, pedagogical methods, and learning outcomes assessment. As an active participant in the Library’s instructional program, the successful candidate will collaborate with library faculty to design curriculum, tools, and learning experiences that enhance critical thinking and information literacy. In consultation with the Head of Instruction and Reference Services, the Instructional Design Librarian will also develop workshops for library and departmental faculty to improve the integration of information literacy concepts into discipline-based curricula. This position reports to the Head of Instruction and Reference Services and will be an active participant in the Library Instruction and Reference Services Program, including teaching classes and providing instruction at the reference desk. The Instruction and Reference Services Department is comprised of eight faculty librarians and the Head of Instruction and Reference. Hours for instruction and research services will include days, nights, and weekends. Goals for the library instruction program are to evaluate, enhance, and diversify face-to-face and web-based instructional offerings in support of information literacy across the curriculum. The Library seeks to develop more effective and sustainable instruction practices to enhance student success. As a member of the faculty, the Instructional Design Librarian is expected to participate in professional organizations, faculty meetings and governance, and professional development opportunities. The successful candidate will have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, a strong commitment to excellent customer service, and be expected to meet all of the library faculty requirements for tenure and promotion. Required Qualifications • A Master’s Degree from an ALA-accredited Library and Information Science program or equivalent • Two years experience applying instructional design principles and techniques, learning theory, and pedagogical methods • Experience teaching information literacy concepts in an academic library setting • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in teaching and learning in academic library instruction • Experience employing methods for measuring student learning outcomes and teaching effectiveness • Experience using applications and scripting languages to create learning objects, interactive learning modules, tutorials, surveys, and other curricular resources • Evidence of participation in collaborative work Preferred Qualifications • Certification or degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or related field • Experience with a range of web technologies and learning management systems such as Blackboard, Elluminate Live, LibGuides, etc. • Demonstrated leadership skills or project management experience • Experience providing reference services to a diverse population Job Duties • Collaborates with library faculty to develop, teach, and assess library credit courses, course- integrated instruction, and single library research sessions • Provides ongoing training and assistance to library colleagues in the use of instructional technologies and the methods of instructional design • Collaborates with library faculty to design, deliver, and assess instructional materials such as interactive modules, tutorials, and learning objects • Maintains a deep knowledge of emerging trends and best practices in academic librarianship, instructional design, and educational technologies • Works with the Head of Instruction and Reference to lead the department in exploring strategies for more effective and sustainable instruction practices • Participates in key projects and campus initiatives related to information literacy, educational technologies, and student success • Advises library faculty on the selection and use of appropriate instructional technologies • Provides reference and research services to students, faculty, staff, and the public Consortium Library The library serves both the UAA and its community campuses with 23,000 students, and APU, a private institution with 800 students. The Consortium Library has an award-winning facility of 200,000 square feet with two computer classrooms in a modern library facility. Demand for library instruction sessions has grown significantly, and numbers of requests for research assistance at the reference desk are strong. The Library licenses over 250 databases and provides web access to the full text of more than 70,000 journals and e-books. It serves as a Foundation Center Cooperative Collection and is a 48 percent selective federal depository. There are 22 FTE faculty positions and 24 FTE staff positions. The Library’s base budget is approximately $5.5M which includes a collections budget of $1.9M.
