Job Description

Under the general direction of the Public Services Supervisor, provides reference service and reader’s advisory to patrons of all ages as well as instruction in the use of materials in all formats. Assists with collection development. Plans, develops and delivers programming. Performs other work as required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Assists patrons in locating general and reference resources including electronic databases. Instructs patrons in search strategies and the use of information resources. Provides individual assistance and instruction in the use of public computers, the Internet, e-readers, and other technologies. Assists patrons in locating reading materials that may be of interest to them using the Library’s Reader’s Advisory collection, the NoveList database, and other resources. Prepares bibliographies and other instructional material as needed. Along with other Adult Services staff, reviews and recommends general reading and reference materials for the library’s collection in a variety of formats, including print, audiovisual, and electronic. Manages and monitors collections to ensure they are current, accurate, and relevant. Manages appropriate portions of the acquisitions budget and evaluates donations for possible addition to the collection. Assumes responsibility for the department in the absence of Adult Services librarians. May assist with the development of grant proposals. Assists with displays for the Adult Services Department. Maintains postings and filings of City materials in the Library. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science or Information Science. Preferred: One year’s experience as a professional librarian in a municipal, public, or school library. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Knowledge Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library service. Knowledge of automated library systems and equipment. Knowledge of collection development principles. Excellent customer service skills. Strong computer skills and familiarity with a variety of reading- and information-related electronic devices and software. Skill in searching library databases, cataloging utilities, and the Internet. Ability to work in a changing environment. Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Ability to instruct adults and children in the use of the Internet and the library’s electronic databases and programs. Ability to develop user guides and bibliographies. Ability to assist patrons in locating information and materials. Ability to respect the privacy of individual users. Ability to plan and conduct library programs. Ability to exercise considerable initiative and judgment. Physical Requirements of the Job: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, speak, and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and use hands, fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to regularly move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment: The work environment is performed in the library. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
