Job Description

Under the general direction of the Children’s Services Supervisor, performs professional duties in Children’s Services. Provides reference services, reader’s advisory, instruction, programming, collection development, and circulation functions for children and their families, as well as outreach services to schools and the community. Performs other work as required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Assists library users in locating general and reference resources, provides instruction and reader’s advisory services to children and their families. Provides individual assistance and instruction in the use of public computers, the Internet, and other technologies. Organizes, coordinates and presents story times and other programs for children. Assists in the preparation and planning of children’s programming done by others. Prepares bibliographies and other instructional material as needed. Goes to area schools and community organizations to promote Children’s services and to deliver programming. Reviews and recommends general reading and reference materials for the library’s collection in a variety of formats, including print, audiovisual and electronic. Manages and monitors collections to ensure that they are current, accurate, and relevant. Manages appropriate portions of the acquisitions budget. Assumes responsibility for the department in the absence of the Children’s Services Supervisor. May assist with the development of grant proposals. Assists with displays for the Children’s Services division. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science or Information Science. Preferred: One year’s experience as a professional librarian in a municipal, public, or school library. Knowledge of early learning and literacy models a plus. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Creativity and enthusiasm in working with children and their families. Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library service. Knowledge of automated library systems and equipment. Knowledge of collection development principles. Excellent customer service skills essential. Skill in the use of technology, from personal computers to e-readers and other devices. Skill in searching library databases, cataloging utilities, and the Internet. Ability to work in a changing environment. Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Ability to assist patrons in locating information and materials. Ability to respect the privacy of individual users. Ability to plan and conduct library programs. Ability to exercise considerable initiative and judgment. Physical Requirements of the Job: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to read, speak, and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit and use hands, fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to regularly move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Occasional use of personal transportation may be required for outreach to schools, community organizations and for staff development opportunities. Work Environment: The work is performed in the library. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
