Job Description

SUMMARY Under the supervision of the designated Reference Librarian, the temporary Reference Librarian provides research consultations for students and faculty in the Research Center of Penrose Library and completes special projects as assigned. M.L.S/M.L.I.S. and one year of library experience required. This is a part-time, temporary position for a pilot project to expand evening and weekend hours for Research Center services during Spring Quarter 2012. The result of the pilot project will help establish the need for an ongoing position. Evening hours and weekend hours required: Saturday - 1:00pm-5:00pm Sunday through Wednesday - 5:00pm-9:00pm ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Depending on the needs of the reference department, duties may include the following as needed: • In forty-five minute consultations, provides in-depth assistance for students doing research for class papers or projects and for faculty and other users doing library research. • Provide backup phone, chat, email, and in-person reference assistance for staff working at the Research Center desk. • Assist in the use of resources by explaining and search strategies. • Explain library policies as needed. • Complete projects assigned by reference librarians (e.g. analyzing collection strengths and needs; processing donations; surveying user satisfaction; etc.) REQUIRED SKILLS M.L.S./M.L.I.S degree and one year of library experience. Excellent customer service and research skills. Good judgment, ability to take direction, problem-solving, attention to detail, and decision-making skills are also needed to assist library patrons in finding and evaluating print and electronic information sources. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Familiarity and experience with computers and peripheral hardware.

PREFERRED SKILLS 1 year of academic library reference experience. Graduate coursework in reference.
