Job Description

This full-time position is the IT Department lead in the Health Sciences Library for assisting library employees and library users (faculty, staff, students) in solving technical problems concerning hardware and software. The position is responsible for installing hardware and software, and for keeping library staff and public workstations secure, functional, easy to use, and up to date while providing excellent customer service. This position also provides “on-demand” AV/Media user support to library patrons and works with a team of library staff to provide instruction on and set up for audiovisual equipment available in the library. This position requires thorough knowledge of hardware and software with the ability to effectively troubleshoot problems with workstations, laptops, networking products, printers, scanners, media drives and other computing equipment. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED ?Maintains, installs, repairs, and configures computer hardware. ?Detects, analyzes and determines solutions for a variety of hardware problems, including hardware malfunctions and/or conflicts, wireless networking issues, and problems with peripherals such as printers, USB drives, and scanners. ?Installs and upgrades software for staff and public workstations throughout the library. On request, works with library staff and campus stakeholders to install new software for training or educational purposes. ?Provides audiovisual support to library patrons on using audiovisual equipment in the Health Sciences Library. Support provided includes assessment of patron needs through both scheduled and unscheduled interviews. Audiovisual equipment includes LCD panels, VCRs, DVDs, wifi, microphones and data projectors. ?Provides setup and instruction on audiovisual equipment for meetings and videoconference events held within the Health Sciences Library. This includes assistance with wifi, LCD panels, projectors, and microphones. Coordinates with Educational Support Services for scheduling and recording events in the library. ?As directed, creates and maintains documentation as needed for Service Desk staff working with clients at public PCs or thin clients; creates and maintains documentation for library staff related to library staff hardware and software. ?Maintains a working knowledge of designated instructional, web browsing, office, and photo editing software. Keeps up to date with end-user technology trends such as web 2.0 web sites, smart phones, and tablet devices. ?Interviews, observes and advises clients to resolve complaints or problems with computer, network and audiovisual equipment. Explains work processes, and promotes good habits in use of computing resources. This includes explaining technical processes to clients that will not be knowledgeable in these areas. ?Monitors Help Desk software daily for hardware and software problems of library staff. Keeps clients informed of Help Desk ticket status. Provides referral to other library departments or campus units when appropriate. Records IT department Help Desk activities that are invoked outside of the Help Desk system. ?Assists or directs in administration and securitization of library’s non-workstation technology items, to include: circulating laptops, tablets, cameras and other devices. ?Shares responsibility (with Systems Administrator) for advance testing of all software used in the library computing environment. Designs appropriate computer images for Teaching Labs and other library computing environments. Performs regular re-imaging and/or software updates on the library's laptops and workstations to ensure reliable operation of computers and software. ?Solicits feedback, performs testing, and optimizes desktops of public or teaching lab workstations or thin clients, which may include browser configuration, placement and labeling of desktop shortcuts, and customization of program menus. ?Performs maintenance and administration for users, groups, networked printers and other network objects; customizes directory structure, login scripts and drive mappings for specific groups and individual users. ?Performs manual tape backups of Innovative Interfaces integrated library system. ?Proactive in helping to maintain a secure IT environment. Works with Windows profiles of both public and staff workstations; remediates computer virus infections; reports security problems if encountered. ?Shares in administration of long-term IT projects. The position may require occasional prolonged and irregular hours, daily lifting and carrying of heavy objects (45+ pounds) and walking, standing, bending, stooping and/or climbing for the majority of a day. *Compensation: The salary offered ($48,000/yr) is usually the minimum listed, however, a salary above the minimum may be offered for some hard to fill positions.
