Job Description

Revised and closing date extended to March 29, 2012, 4:00 p.m. Job Title: Director, Stephen H Hart Library and Research Center Position Number: 09882 Job Location: Downtown Denver (1200 Broadway) Employment Type: Full Time Class Code: 115200 BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION This position exists to oversee and administer the operations of the Stephen H. Hart Library and Research Center and the History Colorado Photo Studio. The Library and Research Center is the primary public point of access to the History Colorado collection and provides access via a variety of mechanisms: in physical form on-site, through the website, in digital form, and through research, photographic documentation, reproduction services, and educational programs. The Director is charged with expanding and improving patron services, managing staff and departmental budgets, promoting the growth and development of digital content, overseeing the formulation and implementation of library policies and procedures, representing the Library and Research Center to internal and external audiences, and encouraging innovation and creative initiatives in support of History Colorado’s mission and goal of expanded access to all collections. The Director supervises 4.625 FTE including: 3 full time librarians, a part-time library services technician, and a full time staff photographer. This position is a non-classified, full time position, exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act, reporting to the Director of Collections and Library, and serving at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. This position has been exempted from the State Personnel System. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Oversee operations of the library and photo studio: Provides general oversight to library/research center daily operations including working with patrons and staff in providing customer-friendly access to collections and information. Oversees the formulation and implementation of library policies and procedures and establishes goals and priorities in support of institutional mission and goals. Responsibly addresses preservation, handling, collections use and security issues in cooperation with curatorial and collection management departments. 2. Manage department operations: The director leads a highly-qualified staff in providing excellent service to internal and external patrons and in the implementation of special projects. Formulates, oversees and implements the library and photo studio budgets efficiently and responsibly and prepares budget and activity reports as requested. Plans for staff, equipment and space needs and manages resources to meet established goals and priorities. 3. Build Institutional Capacity: Seeks, creates, and develops new and improved means of providing access to all History Colorado collections and excellent service to patrons including developing digital content and other resources for the History Colorado website, providing public educational programs, preparing grant proposals, and working across the institution and collaboratively with other organizations to provide expanded content and services to the public. Works with the Division Director to implement division strategic plan and digital future plan. 4. Represent the Library and Research Center in the Division, Society, and profession: Represents the Library and Research Center at internal and external meetings; provide reports and presentations as required; Participates in relevant professional organizations in the library/museum field to gain and share knowledge and to develop collaborative partnerships and supportive relationships. QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate will possess a 21st century vision for providing programs and services that enhance the discovery and accessibility of History Colorado collections. Requires a MLS from an ALA accredited program or an advanced degree in archival administration or a relevant academic discipline. Knowledge and understanding of significant trends and issues museum and archival collections and a minimum of 5 years of leadership experience working with special collections in a library/archives/museum setting is required, as is evidence of progressively increasing supervisory or managerial responsibility. Highly Desirable Qualifications: Experience in the implementation of digital projects and a background in the history of Colorado and the West is highly desirable. A record of participation and engagement in relevant professional association(s) and demonstrated success in grant writing and project management is also desirable as is a track record of innovation including the integration of technology into library services. Highly desirable skills include superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, plus attention to detail. The ability to multitask and prioritize is highly desirable. The successful candidate will exhibit superior customer service and initiative in solving problems. A desire to work both independently and as part of a team is essential.
