Job Description

The Board of Trustees of the Daviess County Public Library (headquartered in Owensboro, KY) seeks an experienced library administrator, skilled in budgeting and financial management, with keen listening skills and the ability to respond to staff and community needs. The County Library is a vital part of why Owensboro was ranked the “#1 Place in Kentucky [for Raising Your Kids]” by Business Week in 2010. This busy Library is always “on the move,” serving 96,000 people from a new 51,000 sq. ft. facility with a staff of 44 FTES, a $3.6million budget, and strong auxiliary support from the Friends and Library Foundation. The Library circulates 749,000+ items annually and has 73,612 registered card holders. Challenges for the new Director include developing a new strategic plan, developing and working with new funding streams, and developing and implementing new services and technologies. Owensboro is the fourth largest city in Kentucky, county seat of Daviess County, and a town of festivals (the annual Barbeque Festival being a popular one)--it is also the industrial, medical, retail and cultural hub of western Kentucky. It is 32 miles southeast of Evansville, IN; 109 miles southwest of Louisville, KY; and 123 miles north of Nashville, TN. The City is strategically located on the southern banks of the Ohio River, which provides a majestic backdrop to the ambitious Downtown Revitalization initiative and Riverfront Master Plan. The $120 million Downtown Plan calls for a riverfront park, downtown hotel and convention center, a market square and an arts academy. Owensboro already offers a wide range of recreational and cultural activities from fishing on a nearby lake to live performances of the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, one of the finest in the state. Strong school systems and higher education institutions put the “finishing touch” on why people want to live and work in Owensboro. For information on the Library, Owensboro, and Daviess County, see http://www.gossagesager.com/DCPLlinks.htm. Responsibilities. As the chief executive officer of the Library (an independent taxing district), the Director plans, organizes, directs, evaluates, and reviews the library’s resources, personnel, facilities, services and programs to respond to the needs of the community. The Director operates under the executive direction of the 5-member Library Board of Trustees. Work includes developing and monitoring budget resources, planning and implementing overall library goals and objectives, and oversight of staff and services necessary to provide optimal service to Daviess County residents. For the detailed job description, see http://www.gossagesager.com/DCPLjobdesc.pdf. Qualifications. A Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited graduate library school; eligibility for Professional Level I Certificate meeting KY certification; and a minimum of five years of successful public library experience which includes at least two years of upper administrative experience and staff supervision. Essential attributes include a broad knowledge of the principles and practices of librarianship; excellent managerial, financial, planning and analytical capacity; ability to communicate with diverse groups concerning library affairs; experience evaluating new services and technologies; ability to handle critical incidents and resolve conflicts involving customers, staff, materials, or facilities; initiative, awareness and vision in developing library services, and skill in building and maintaining effective relationships with the Library Board, staff and community. Successful director experience reporting to a governing board and experience working on a building project are preferred. Compensation. A starting salary range of $95,000-$115,000 with an attractive benefits package.
