BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION This position exists to provide researchers and the public with access to information in the History Colorado collection and provides reference service both onsite and virtually. This position will facilitate outreach through classes, social media, and other types of programs. In order to provide the best possible service to researchers, the general public, and internal patrons, the position will be familiar with HC resources including documentary and artifact collections, educational programs, and exhibits. This position is a non-classified, full time position, exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act, reporting to the Director of the Stephen H. Hart Library, and serving at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. This position has been exempted from the State Personnel System. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Research and Reference Services: The position is responsible for independently researching collections in fulfillment of patron research requests including in person, by phone, by mail, online and fee-based research. Participates in collecting research and use statistics for library resources and outreach programs. The position recommends, drafts, and implements revisions to policies and procedures relevant to collection access, processing, data collection and use. The position also maintains lists of external resources of benefit to research patrons. 2. Outreach and Education: The position is responsible for coordinating outreach and program activities including: social media, website information for the Collections & Library Division, educational workshops and programs, and library and research center tours. The position will also participate in creating web and program content. 3. Reading Room Visitor Support: The position supports Library/Research Center activities through courteous customer service including extensive desk service, registering, and orienting reading room visitors; identifying and pulling collection materials; and instructing patrons in the use of reference indexes, finding aids and library access machines. As part of the library/research center team, the position assists with opening and closing the reading room, and providing backup support for all forms of patron services. May also participate in collections access maintenance projects such as indexing, cataloging, and data input. 4. Participate in departmental, institutional, and professional meetings: The position participates in library, division, and all-hands meetings, as well as exhibit team and committee meetings as projects occur. Position will participate in professional groups such as the Colorado Library Association, the Society of Rocky Mountain Archivists, or other related organizations to keep informed of changes and developments in the field and to insure that History Colorado access, service, and use policies remain current; and will share relevant information and expertise with colleagues. The position works with other organizations such as the Denver Public Library or Colorado State Library on projects that enhance and promote the Society’s interests. 5. Build the Organization through greater efficiency: Develop, create, and seek out new and better ways to conduct the duties of this position. Make the work processes more efficient and effective. Implement cost-saving measures wherever possible. Bring forward ideas that result in improvements in revenue generation or better services to the State of Colorado.

Additional Info & Requirements

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience with detail-oriented work including organizing and maintaining files and records, and must be computer literate. The successful candidate will possess a teamwork orientation and a strong sense of initiative. The candidate must demonstrate diplomacy, active communication skills, and positive “people skills.” Familiarity with social media is required. Knowledge of library and archive best practices is required. Familiarity with museum standards and collections handling practices is highly desirable. Experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Office, and using on-line library catalog programs and library and museum collection databases is highly desirable. Highly Desirable Qualifications: • Knowledge of Colorado history and history of the American West. • Familiarity with historical and genealogical research methods and tools. • Ability to write engaging and informative pieces on historical topics, of appeal to a broad audience. • Experience with teaching research methods and tools to general audiences. • Experience conducting library outreach, including use of social media, programming, and creative interpretation of other outreach tools. • Some familiarity with standard library cataloging practice, museum accession processes, serials management, and traditional manuscripts processing and organization. Special Necessary Requirements: A condition of employment is the successful completion of a background check. Must be able to work Tuesday through Saturday. This position requires the ability to lift boxes up to 40 lbs from 14’ shelves using a ladder. It also requires the ability to spend long periods of time standing, as well as long periods of time sitting.
