Job Description
Location: Athmar Park Branch Library, 1055 S. Tejon St. at W. Mississippi Ave. Status/Schedule: Regular, full-time, 40 hours per week. The schedule will be determined by the needs of the department and may include evening and weekend hours. Salary Range: $19.09 - $23.48 per hour starting salary range; $19.09 - $27.88 per hour full salary range. The City and County of Denver benefit package will be offered. Duties and Responsibilities: Creates positive experiences for library customers by planning, scheduling and implementing group visits for children from birth through middle school in the library and external locations. Serves customers of all ages in a branch dedicated to bringing library services to ethnically, linguistically and economically diverse children. Provides services and outreach designed to educate and promote library usage with emphasis on children’s services. Creates programming for youth during out of school time. Assists customers in all circulation activities. Uses informed judgment to follow rules and procedures. Works cooperatively with other staff and supports all aspects of library service to the citizens of Denver. Oversees library operations as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of library services for infancy through adolescence and current research in early literacy and child/brain development. Knowledge of early literacy best practices in library and community settings. Knowledge of the Public Library Association’s ECRR initiative and supporting materials/resources. Knowledge of positive youth development practices. Knowledge of children’s literature. Skill in communicating and establishing effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, organizations, and the public. Skill in designing, preparing, and implementing professional instruction and programs such as teacher/parent literacy training. Skill in reading aloud clearly, concisely and with expression. Ability to interpret, communicate, and present information, both orally and in writing. Ability to thrive in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups. Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, volunteers and community. Ability to make appropriate choices of materials for programming and outreach. Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to be innovative, flexible and well organized. Experience: Two years of experience teaching or presenting information in a variety of situations and settings. Experience with Internet and database searching required. Education: Bachelor’s degree in related field. Special Requirements: Spanish language skills strongly preferred.
