Job Description

Under the general direction of the Library Director, provides supervision and leadership. Plans, implements, coordinates and evaluates public service functions with a strong customer focus. Supervises Adult, Teen and Children’s divisions. Assists with budget development. Work includes program development for Adult Services as well as performing reference and readers’ advisory services. Assumes operational esponsibility for the library in the director’s absence. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: • Provides excellent customer service by implementing and managing library services designed for customers of all ages seeking popular materials and quick service. • Oversees daily operations of Adult, Teen and Children’s departments including supervision of personnel, scheduling and customer service issues. • Communicates effectively with customers, staff, and administration. • Evaluates emerging technologies and library applications; oversees administration of the library’s electronic resources to include selection, price negotiations and licensing terms. • Serves on the library leadership team and assists with library innovation, planning, management and governance. • Works on Adult and Children’s Reference desks up to fifteen hours per week, including evening and weekend rotations. • Contributes to the library’s public services mission by participating in teaching, outreach or other public service activities as time permits. • Develops and monitors division budgets. • Prepares reports and performs statistical analysis for programs, collections, and projects. • Interviews, hires, trains and evaluates new staff members. • Works with adult services team on community programming.

Additional Info & Requirements

Successful candidates may be required to complete a pre-placement physical and substance screen prior to employment. A background investigation will be performed on qualified candidates. Occasional use of personal transportation may be required for outreach to schools, community organizations and for staff development opportunities.Three (3) years experience as a librarian in a public or academic library setting; or any equivalent combination of acceptable training, education and experience. A minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience is required to include hiring, training, coaching, performance evaluations and formal reviews. Knowledge of III Millennium strongly preferred. SPECIAL LICENSE, REGISTRATION, OR CERTIFICATE REQUIRED: Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: • Knowledge of library principles and services for all ages • Knowledge of publishing trends and popular materials • Knowledge of management methods and practices • Knowledge of current and emerging technologies, including e-content delivery • Knowledge of trends in public libraries, including transliteracy, early literacy, and effects of electronic publishing on access and delivery • Skill in providing strong, effective leadership • Skill in providing reference, reader’s and media advisory service to all ages • Skill in using technology and offering technological assistance to users • Skill in the recruitment, selection, training and motivation of staff • Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner • Ability to discern trends and affect change through gathering, evaluating and interpreting statistical data • Ability to plan, assign, schedule, direct and evaluate the work of those supervised • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing • Ability to prepare analytical reports using tables, graphs and charts • Ability to create and maintain positive staff relationships • Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, and community • Ability to multi-task and prioritize • Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends • Possession of a forward-focused vision for providing programs and services that enhance the discovery and accessibility of library collections
