Job Description

The Bindery Prep/Book Repair Technician, located within the Collection Management section of the Arthur Lakes Library, assembles loose serials for binding; completes and processes forms for bindery services; verifies that returned bound volumes meet work order instructions; updates records in the Integrated Library System (ILS) to reflect status of items at the bindery and responds to relevant queries from Library staff. This position also monitors the physical condition of circulating materials and performs in-house repairs (e.g. tears, tip-ins, spine and cover repair) as necessary, using appropriate tools and materials; constructs pockets, boxes and other protective enclosures; and recommends alternatives for items not repairable in-house. This position also trains and supervises student workers in the section, and assists with special projects.

Additional Info & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: One year of general library experience including typing, ordering, preparing, shelving, and maintaining library materials. This position requires experience preparing library serials for shipment to a commercial bindery. Must have verifiable hands-on experience and/or training with the tools and materials needed to perform in-house repairs and physical preservation of library materials. Other requirements include good interpersonal and communications skills; ability to manage data accurately and consistently; ability to work both independently and in a team environment; knowledge of library automated systems and basic computer skills; and ability to plan projects and work flow. Desired Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have experience working in a library at a college or university. Also desired: experience with the Voyager system; experience working in the technical services area of a library; knowledge of the MARC format; and experience training and leading a work team.
