Job Description

Nature of Work: This position is responsible for outreach, promotion and special projects for the Sciences Department, primarily the Earth Sciences and Map Library, with an emphasis on digital projects of all types. Designs, develops, and maintains the Earth Sciences and Map Library’s websites. In collaboration with librarians and other staff, conceives of and carries out digital projects, creates guides and other learning objects to promote and provide access to collections, and creates outreach programming based on user needs. Provides specialized research assistance to individuals and groups for maps, earth sciences, and geospatial data. This position supports the Sciences Department, specifically the Earth Sciences Library and the Map Library, but duties are weighed towards the Map Library (approximately 60%).

Additional Info & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications Four years of general library experience including at least one year of demonstrated technical experience in web design or digital technologies such as Web 2.0 applications (blogs, social bookmarking, etc.), mash-ups, custom Google Maps or other online mapping applications. Substitution: Two years of course work from an accredited college or university or two years of industry experience in the following fields: library science, promotion, outreach, public services, public relations, marketing, computer/IT, will substitute for two of the four years of general library experience. Experience with maps and geospatial data. Additional demonstrated experience with digital technologies such as Flash, various scripting languages, XML, etc. is preferable. In addition, the ideal candidate would have an aptitude for specialized reference, feel at ease with new technologies and have an eye for design.

The Community

Department Information: The Sciences Department supports the teaching and research of faculty, staff, and students in several departments in the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Engineering & Applied Sciences, as well as campus-affiliated research institutes and centers, and serves as a community resource beyond the campus. The Department is comprised of three units, L.H. Gemmill Library of Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics; the Science Library; and the Jerry Crail Johnson Earth Sciences & Map Library. The Jerry Crail Johnson Earth Sciences & Map Library supports teaching and research in the disciplines of geology, physical geography, and related earth sciences subjects. This is accomplished through collection development, bibliographic instruction, reference services, reserve desk services, cataloging of the map collection, and circulation of both the map and book collections. The Map Library is a unit within the Earth Sciences Library and serves an even broader clientele.
