Job Description

THIS IS A FULL-TIME, NON-EXEMPT (36 HOUR/WEEK) POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Processing Specialist position performs technical processing services necessary to prepare and package library materials to meet the circulation and patron usage needs. Work is performed under general supervision. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: • Performs consistent high quality level processing and pre-processing of library materials. Is aware of vendor processing arrangements (outsourcing), monitors for errors. • Uses the integrated library system for check-in purposes prior to crating of all new materials. Searches for genre label information, number of holds, and any other data needed to identify the library item. • Practices effective personal and branch safety procedures including using correct lifting, pushing, and stretching techniques; preventing the blocking of aisles, doorways, and emergency exits; reporting unsafe practices; working to ensure a neat, safe, and attractive work area. • Stays abreast of department and district communications by attending departmental meetings, reading E-mails, message board and department memos. Stays aware of new materials processing practices and guidelines. • Processes “transit request” items immediately, including “Hot” or “Street” date materials. • Monitors street date items as needed to avoid early release prior to legal publisher on-sale date. • Prints hub labels for A/V items. Uses labeling system to print spine labels when necessary. • Consistently follows the philosophy of the "patron comes first" to include processing the holds materials first to get them to patrons quickly. • Assists the receiving team as needed. Occasionally assists with circulation department materials handling. • Creates positive experiences for library patrons by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks; presents a positive image of the library in attitude, communications and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas. • Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, co-workers, and volunteers. • Stays current on DCL policies, processes, procedures and technologies required to perform work duties. • Promotes DCL’s culture of safety by following library safety policy guidelines and safety rules. Practices effective personal and branch safety. • Performs other work duties as assigned.

Additional Info & Requirements

• Experience: Basic knowledge of office procedures and business practices plus ability to learn library Technical Services Department procedures in processing of library materials is preferred. Two years of previous library experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: • Must be able to perform repetitive detail-oriented tasks with a high degree of accuracy. • Must be able to work independently. Must have the ability to follow verbal and written instructions. • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff members and vendors. • General knowledge of office equipment (copier, fax, ten key calculator) is required. • Position requires ability to work in a cooperative manner as a team member. • Requires an ability to read, follow directions, learn the Technical Services Departments procedures, and organize time and tasks efficiently. • Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in functions and technology required to perform job duties, working effectively independently or as part of a team to complete tasks as assigned. • Must communicate effectively using English. Must read, write and understand English at a level appropriate to the position. • Computer Skills: Must demonstrate competency in computer use including internet, email, Microsoft Office Products (or equivalent). Keyboard skills required at an equivalent of typing 35 words per minute with minimal errors. Must be able to learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs as required to effectively and efficiently perform assigned duties. • Physical Abilities: Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to: Stand, walk, bend to floor level, reach to a height over 70 inches, read a minimum 8 point font, and work at computer workstations, frequently. Handle materials, push/pull loads with a force of up to 35 pounds, carry 15 pounds, lift up to 35 pounds, grip up to 15 pounds, kneel, squat and climb, on a regular basis. On a limited basis, tolerate residual smoke, dust, mold or foreign substances on materials.
