Job Description

BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION: It is the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District to seek, engage and transform lives through library services and resources that enrich individual lives and build community. This position operates in a diverse environment to help fulfill PPLD’s mission by providing children’s programming, children’s reference, readers’ advisory services and a focus on training Every Child Ready to Read. This position uses comprehensive knowledge of library science, the PPLD children’s collection, electronic databases, current technologies, and community resources. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Provides expertise regarding children’s developmental stages, interests, community needs and children’s literature 2. Will train new and existing children’s staff at all libraries in Every Child Ready to Read and all preschool programs 3. May coordinate and implement initiatives (i.e early literacy, family literacy, school-age programming, etc.) in Children’s services 4. Works on the public service desks providing reference service to walk-ins, over the phone, and via electronic delivery; reference service includes reference and reader’s advisory services with age- appropriate materials and online searches for children, caregivers, and educators 5. Creates, promotes, and presents children’s programming (focuses on developmental needs, interests and promoting children’s literacy to parents and other adults or caregivers) 6. Promotes library services and materials through age-appropriate tours, publicity, displays and merchandising 7. Develops reading lists, pathfinders, booktalks or other creative means to make the children’s collection more accessible 8. Collaborates with schools or community groups and provides outreach to communicate services and programs 9. Coordinates a major function in the preparation of Summer Reading Program (such as web page development, prize management, or sponsor liaison) 10. Suggests Children’s collection materials based on PPLD’s collection guidelines and policies 11. Examines Children’s collection for replacement and/or removal of materials 12. Reads and evaluates challenged materials as requested 13. Will manage storytelling resources both print and online 14. May manage Children’s collections materials (i.e., storytelling collection, literacy kits, reference) 15. May participate on various PPLD Teams or advisory boards as requested 16. May organize and conduct projects related to departmental goals and needs 17. Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned

Additional Info & Requirements

Prefer a candidate with a minimum of one year of library or other public service work experience. Prefer candiddates that have experience working with children in a library setting. Prefer candidate with ECRR (Every Child Ready to Read) training.
