Job Description

Performs professional library services by linking resources and customers, and enables community civil discourse. Serves as an innovative leader within the library, city government, and the community. A Senior Library Manager is an information advocate and forward thinker who inspires learning, discovery and the development of 21st century skills in staff, volunteers, and the community. Oversees and provides a variety of literacy programming, content creation, and preservation. Inspires continued learning, collaboration, skill development, and advocates for the library. Provides leadership and supervision to staff in one or more aspects of library operations. Leads in the development and implementation of new and/or enhanced services. A Senior Library Manager supervises one of the major library programs, assists the Library Director with the administration of the City’s Library services and functions and performs administrative, professional and technical library work at middle management level. • Provide and model exceptional customer service by making the customer the first priority. • Establish, maintain, and foster positive, harmonious, professional, and effective working relationships. • Manage, create and/or deliver exceptional programming and educational opportunities within the library, through community outreach, and virtually. • Teach and collaborate with customers, staff, and a variety of organizations to create content, to be effective consumers of information, and to be a lifelong learner. • Communicate library policies and procedures, request compliance with Library Rules of Conduct, and serve as “In-Charge” person in the evenings, on weekends, and as assigned. • Perform daily duties in a manner consistent with the Library’s mission, goals, and objectives. • Meet diverse community needs, expose the libraries' rich collections and resources to the community and continually learns, applies and teaches new technologies. • Select, train, evaluate, and supervise paraprofessional and professional staff. Identify, implement, and monitor disciplinary action when required. Identify, plan and oversee projects including grants. • Communicate regularly with staff who use collection management software to monitor material levels. • Develop and monitor the budget for assigned library program and participate in the development of the library department budget. • Plan, organize and manage the activities and staff of a library program. • Prepare oral and written reports for City Council, City Management, Library Board, and other organizations. • Serve as contract administrator for assigned grants ensuring compliance with regulations, specified instructions and policies. • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of: Principles, library policies, best practices, trends and current professional library theories and issues. Customer service principles and practices with dedicated emphasis towards excellence in service delivery. Current and emerging models, practices, and tools used by public libraries for the access and discoverability of resources. Library resources, both digital and physical, with proven ability to research, retrieve, evaluate, and utilize. Supervisory techniques and practices. Development of community outreach services to promote library usage. Contract administration. Relevant technology and computer literacy including Microsoft Office software, digital devices, and Integrated Library Systems (ILS) software. Ability to: Provide leadership and embrace risk taking, innovation, collaboration and change. Listen, communicate and positively interact with internal customers, external customers and vendors. Analyze, take ownership and resolve requests and issues using critical thinking skills. Present programs to a variety of audiences (both internal and external). Proactively and continually develop and enhance professional skills. Operate with minimum supervision and work in a team environment to build partnerships, find solutions and make service enhancements. Manage projects by applying critical thinking and analytical problem solving skills. Engage in emerging technologies including social media outlets. Analyze community needs and demographics. Create, catalog, and maintain digital objects. Coordinate and oversee the daily activities of both regular staff and volunteers. Manage employees who themselves have managerial responsibilities. Assess staff skill levels, provide education and training, and establish individual developmental programs. Contribute strategic thinking in order to aid the Library Director in short and long term planning. Effectively administer a library program. Serve in absence of the Library Director.
