Job Description

Basic Function: Plans and manages the operations of the Technical Services Department. Prepares newly acquired library materials for patron use. Supervises library volunteers. Physical Requirements: Hearing and vision corrected to normal ranges. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and push a loaded book truck weighing 120 pounds. Ability to reach up to seven feet to retrieve and replace books with a stool or ladder, as needed. Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS degree preferred, or any equivalent combination of education and/or training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities as approved by the Director. Bachelor’s degree required. Ability to supervise personnel; keep abreast of current library trends in library technical services. Ability to learn to operate equipment as required by the position; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and library patrons. Excellent administrative, secretarial and office skills required. This includes fast and accurate word-processing (65 wpm) and data entry. Duties and Responsibilities:  Provides efficient, courteous public service and presents a positive image of the library in attitude, appearance and performance of duties.  Develops, implements and evaluates policies and procedures for Technical Services.  Selects, trains and supervises volunteers and staff to perform the work of the Technical Services Department.  Directs the maintenance of the bibliographic database to assure that it is an accurate and current catalog representing the library’s holdings.  Maintains statistical records for tech processing and provides monthly reports.  Researches and orders supplies needed for library and tech services.  Performs original and copy cataloging for books and other materials.  Prepares newly acquired library materials for patron use.  Insures that circulation procedures maintain patrons’ confidentiality.  Helps determine which donated materials will be added to the collection by checking against holdings in the computer and on the shelf and by comparing edition statements and condition.  Cleaning and repairing of library materials.  Attends job related workshops and training sessions.  Researches reference questions posed by the public using knowledge of this library’s collection.  Performs desk duties in the adult and children’s rooms, as needed.  Shelves library materials.  Maintains equipment inventory.  Assists the Director in managing the library’s financial activities. These activities include but are not limited to: verification of invoices for payment, weekly deposits, copying and filing of paperwork.  Coordinates maintenance of both library buildings.  Responsible for employee law posters.  Insurance liaison: Health Insurance Committee Representative.  Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of basic bookkeeping procedures and practices. Ability to keep confidential records and performs routine tasks. Ability to learn library methods, techniques and computerized databases. Ability to work in a team environment; use good judgment. Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers and the public. Ability to perform repetitive tasks while maintaining a high level of concentration and accuracy. Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed.

Additional Info & Requirements

Hours are 8:30 - 5:00 Monday-Friday, some nights or Saturdays may be required. Position begins June 5, 2013Cataloging experience preferred.
