Job Description

Are you passionate about promoting literacy in early childhood? Then here is your opportunity to make a difference! Pueblo City County Library District is seeking a Youth Librarian with Early Literacy Emphasis to lead the early literacy efforts in the District’s 5 library locations, plus 3 new libraries to open in 2014. In this position you’ll be working with an energetic team to bring in children’s authors, network with community organizations and develop creative programs for youth. About the Youth Librarian with Early Literacy Emphasis Position: Serves as the primary interface for the Library District on early literacy issues and develops partnerships with community organizations that also serve youth including Rocky Mountain SER Head Start, Pueblo Early Childhood Council, Bright Beginnings, and area day care facilities. Develops all story time programs for the Library District. Leads planning and implementation of Summer Reading youth programming for the Library District. Leads literacy-based programming for the Library District such as annual Literacy Fairs and author visit programs. Provides reference assistance through use of Sirsi, by helping customers locate materials, answers questions, places holds, completes forms, confers with other staff and makes referrals to other organizations and agencies; instructs customers in the use of print and on-line materials, equipment, and technologies. Arranges programs for the public and schools which promote the use of library materials and services. Provides training to storytellers on how to utilize the Every Child Ready to Read literacy skill development techniques. Resolves customer issues and communicates library policies and procedures to customers. Uses diplomacy and tact to address customers of all ages about appropriate conduct within the library. Stays informed of District news and events and work related information by checking email, announcements, newsletters and posters. Maintains consistent use of electronic time keeping and employee payroll/personnel information access systems, as well as district shared electronic information systems. Supports team daily efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment for customers and employees by staying alert to your surroundings and following safety procedures. Occasionally assigned to the role of Person in Charge for the Rawlings Library including oversight of safety, building security and of the security guard on duty.

Demonstrated creativity in youth programming. Knowledge of research techniques, reference resources, databases and Internet resources. Knowledge of library automation systems. Excellent customer relations skills and the ability to deal with difficult or unique library customers. Ability to conduct reference interviews and provide positive readers’ advisory experiences. Intermediate computer skills using Microsoft Office, email, internet, electronic databases and library catalogue software.
