Job Description

The Training Specialist designs training and performs training (classroom and self- paced online training) duties to further the development of all library staff. This position creates and implements the instructional designs necessary for training staff in the understanding and use of the library\'s software system and other library-related databases and procedures. This position reports to the Training Manager in support of all training programs serving staff. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: • Plans, conducts and evaluates training for library staff, including but not limited to patron services, reference youth services and information technology skills. The instruction the staff trainer will develop and conduct includes: Horizon, VuFind (catalog interface), DCL information databases, word processing and spreadsheets software training. Also includes various soft-skills training efforts such as providing excellent patron services training, interpersonal communication, and change management. • Develops, designs and maintains a variety of training documents and learning aids for use in the library system. • Appraises course creation quality in terms of design, writing, editing, and direction; conducts training needs assessment efforts before creating and designing training program. • Teams with the training manager and the other staff trainers in planning, developing, and facilitating all aspects of the DCL instructional program. • Applies the appropriate learning theories and instructional theories. Stays abreast of current learning and instructional trends and theories. • Designs online and self-paced curricula as needed for all levels of staff. Stays abreast of the latest industry technology tools and trends in online education. Implements improvements as necessary. • Identifies areas of weaknesses in current courses, and employs strategies for improvement. Takes appropriate steps to address any problems noted through revisions and, when necessary, re-development of courses. • Functions as an effective liaison between DCL branches and departments. • Mentors public service staff members upon request by department supervisors. • Accesses professional resources and attends training seminars to maintain and increase knowledge in the area of information literacy and to keep up with current library and instructional technology trends. • Balances multiple projects, including producing high quality work under tight deadlines, with minimal supervision. • Periodically works at library branches as a job learning measure. • Mentors and helps facilitate online learning events with subject matter experts.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Exhibits an aptitude for teaching adult learners in both a classroom setting and via online training process, as well as one-on-one. Demonstrates strong presentation skills. • Exhibits an aptitude for researching, creating, composing and editing written training manuals, lessons and learning aids. • Demonstrates an ability to work collaboratively as a member of the training team. Establishes and maintains excellent working relationships with all DCL departments and branches. • Demonstrates an ability work independently and to handle several ongoing training projects and responsibilities simultaneously. • Shows an ability to accept and manage change, to adapt to new conditions and devise new working methods as necessary. • Understands, supports and endorses the DCL Core Values as well as the Mission Statement, Long-Range Plan, Policy Statements and other related documents. • Must have public library service experience with the ability to provide excellent service to patrons. Exhibits a broad knowledge of both print and online information sources. • Must demonstrate strong computer literacy abilities, including email systems, the Internet, word processing presentation software and spreadsheets. Exhibits knowledge of various library technologies, including eMedia. Exhibits knowledge of training technologies, including web conferencing, training management systems, and authoring tools such Captivate, Camtasia or StoryLine. • Must demonstrate proficiency in computer use including instructional presentation tools and social media. • Exhibits superior interpersonal skills as well as excellent verbal communication skills. • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills and a positive lifelong learning attitude.
