Job Description

This position manages library services in three (3) correctional facilities according to accepted correctional library practices and principles. * Determines the procedures for how the libraries will operate. Coordinates and supervises all general library activities and ensures offender access to library services; * Composes and revises library operating procedures, schedules, and posted operational rules to ensure offender access to library services. Provides readers\\\\\\\' advisory and reference services to assist offenders and staff in selection and use of library materials. Provides outreach services to offenders in segregation and/or special needs areas who are unable to visit the library personally; * Prepares unit budget request with justification: manage library budget, keeping accurate fiscal records; * Maintains all library records. Keeps monthly usage statistics, and submits narrative and statistical reports to Program Manager, Regional Librarian, and the State Library. Assesses current and future library technology needs; * Provides structured instruction to students in use of information, (selecting, retrieving, analyzing, evaluating, synthesizing, creating, and communicating) in all curriculum content areas; * Works with teachers and students to ensure that the school library media program contributes fully to the educational process and is an integral part of the school curriculum; works with teachers to collaboratively plan instructional units, instructing the information literacy components of the units; * Trains, supervises, and evaluates YOS library technician II. Serves as work leader for Pueblo Complex libraries: schedules library staff work hours to provide maximum accessibility for offenders to library services; assigns tasks, establishes work standards, and monitors progress and work flow; provides initial and ongoing training in public and technical library skills; provides input on performance evaluations for LVCF and SCCF library technicians; * Formulates collection development plan to govern purchase of library materials based on analysis and evaluation of the existing collection, the specific needs of the offender population, and educational, mental health, special and young adult needs and other facility program needs; * Consults standard library review publications and selects appropriate books, periodicals, and audio-visual materials for library collection in accord with the collection development plan; * Purchases library materials, equipment and supplies, following DOC and State Library purchasing procedures. Weeds worn, damaged, outdated, unused items from the collection; * Catalogs library materials by assigning appropriate Dewey numbers and subject headings for new materials, to prepare for their entry into the computer catalog. Maintains library computer catalog and automated circulation system. Reviews cataloging records after data entry to ensure that the catalog is compliant with DOC-wide standards; * Position communicates with facility staff (administrators, security/housing, education, mental health, case managers, etc.) on an ongoing basis to ensure that library services are integrated into overall facility operations.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES: * Proficiency in office technologies, especially Microsoft Office Suite and integrated library systems; * Exceptional interpersonal/customer service skills; * Training/instructing: ability to teach others how to do something; * Active listening: ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate; * Keen ability to multi-task and demonstrate flexibility; * Highly effective organizing, planning and prioritizing skills; Strong self motivation; * Compelling attention to detail; * Significant critical thinking, decision making and problem solving skills; * Excellent written and oral communication skills. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent Library Media Master’s from an ALA- or NCATE-accredited college or university.
