Job Description

SEVERAL OPEN POSITIONS FOR SUBSTITUTE LIBRARIANS AT ALL DOUGLAS COUNTY LIBRARIES. PLEASE SEE “REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS.” DESCRIPTION: The Substitute Librarian position performs a variety of professional duties related to reference and adult services for library patrons. The position plans, coordinates and implements library services and programs, providing complex professional and technical library services to the community. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and initiative. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: • Demonstrates professional library science knowledge, public reference service skills, and an understanding of public library operations. Supports “patron first” practices. • Effectively assists patrons of all ages, from infants to seniors; Storytime experience is a plus. • Assists patrons of all ages, by providing professional library services. Assists patrons in using special reference tools, conducting in-depth searches, preparing bibliographies, and locating materials. Utilizes knowledge of library collection and reference sources. Demonstrates command of numerous subject areas to assist patrons and staff with their inquiries. • Demonstrates ability to conduct successful reference interviews to determine specific informational requirements of patrons. Skilled in interpersonal communications and in the ability to understand, interpret, and paraphrase patron questions in order to negotiate successful outcomes. • Successfully represents the library with tact and courtesy, showing the ability to think and act appropriately under pressure. Exhibits sound professional judgment and demeanor in all public and staff transactions. • Can instruct patrons in the use of print sources and electronic bibliographic reference tools. • Demonstrates advanced reference and search skills in the use of computer searching techniques. Can organize and communicate this information for staff training. Makes informed recommendations on acquisition of new electronic resources. • Develops in-depth knowledge in specific subject and reference areas to facilitate effective District collection development. Reviews professional journals such as Booklist, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, and New York Times Book Review for acquisition recommendations. Stays abreast of new reference purchases. Demonstrates interest in current events and social issues. • Supports branch health and safety practices throughout the library. • All work items described here may be performed in a virtual/call center environment. • Uses discretion in addressing problem situations or conflicts at the appropriate level. Does not avoid problematic situations. • Provides readers\' advisory service to patrons. • As required, serves as the staff Person In Charge (PIC) within the branch. • Creates positive experiences for library patrons by effectively and efficiently performing job tasks; presents a positive image of the library in attitude, communications and appearance while performing duties in both the public and staff areas. • Demonstrates a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, co-workers, and volunteers. • Stays current on DCL policies, processes, procedures and technologies required to perform work duties. • Promotes DCL’s culture of safety by following library safety policy guidelines and safety rules. Practices effective personal and branch safety. • Performs other work duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is generally performed in a library and office environment, on multiple workstations, tasks, software programs and projects. Work requires frequent physical activity, close visual work, and computer use; with regular proximity to automated handling equipment, limited exposure to moderate noise levels, residual dirt, dust, and occasional exposure to chemicals, mold or foreign substances. Work involves extensive interaction with customers and staff, moderate exposure to behavior issues. Requires flexibility to substitute at all branches of Douglas County Libraries as needed. Requires availability for varied work hours, including weekdays, weekends and evenings.• Working knowledge of the professional principles of reference services to include reference tools and methodologies, including print and electronic sources is required. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing is required. Must be able to work independently, and to demonstrate a positive attitude toward staff and patrons of all ages whether in person or on the phone.. • Must be able to maintain a positive professional image in representing reference services and the Library District during extensive contact with patrons, staff and other library systems. • Ability to perform standard circulation duties in the course of serving reference and other patrons is required. • Requires the ability to work under periods of occasional stress resulting from peak periods of patron service requests. • Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in functions and technology required to perform job duties, working effectively independently or as part of a team to complete tasks as assigned. • Must communicate effectively using English. Must read, write and understand English at a level appropriate to the position.
