Job Description

The ND State Library is a progressive agency that designs and provides cooperative library programs to fulfill its mission of support to the public libraries of North Dakota and, via cooperative services, all types of libraries in the state. ND State Library anticipates a State Library Director who is a visionary leader with a commitment to teamwork, willing to advance partnerships, and one who will work to create a positive awareness, both in the state and nationally, of the ND State Library and its partners. • Direct the development of management programs and associated policies to ensure the implementation of the Library Services mission in meeting the needs of State agencies, local government and the general public. • Interpret and apply statutes and regulations regarding library services. • Develop goals and objectives for the development, implementation, and evaluation of library, research, and information services. • Represent the State Library before federal, state, and local officials; educational administrators, colleagues, state legislators, and the Institute of Museum & Library Services. • Determines priorities and ensures appropriate distribution and utilization of resources through preparation and justification of budget proposals and administrative policies. • Administer the Library’s personnel and manpower resources and issues. • Initiates and develops plans to coordinator library/information service activities between libraries and community resources. • Oversees the collection of data and design of collection tools and determines software vendor to use. • Consults with librarians, school officials and others to provide technical assistance and advice. • Prepare and make effective written and oral presentations for use within and outside the agency.

Other desired abilities, skills and knowledge include strong leadership skills, ability to interact effectively with public and elected officials, the library community and the media. Excellent communications and public speaking skills required. A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of current issues and trends in libraries of all types.
