Job Description

The Senior Cataloging Librarian works with the Head of Cataloging Department to develop the long term strategic goals and objectives of the Qatar National Library cataloging team. Catalogs print and electronic resources in English. Maintains and insures the integrity of the authority records. Edits and processes data files and MARC records from vendors and various bibliographic utilities. Assists with the ordering of various language library materials. Supervises the copy cataloging operations of the team and works closely with colleagues in Technical Services to maintain the department\'s quality of work. Employing innovative technologies and practices at a high level. Coordinates with all entities to further develop bibliographic access to all materials. Detailed Description - Insure progress in building multi-lingual authority files - Cooperate and coordinate activities to develop international standards for the bibliographic control of materials - Take a leading role in the interpretation of international standards pertaining to all materials - Perform original and complex copy cataloging of print and electronic resources to ensure accuracy of the database. - Ensure quality of bibliographic records through compliance with international and local standards such as RDA, MARC, AACR2r, LCSH, LCCS, OCLC, LC cataloging practices, and other appropriate cataloging and metadata standards. - Supervise and mentor the copy cataloging team. - Create and maintain authority records to enable standardization and easy to use cross-referencing. - Upload the Qatar National Library holdings into the OCLC database to improve access to the information held in libraries around the globe. - Assist in updating cataloging policies and procedures to ensure compliance with international standards, rules and best practices for cataloging. - Assist in the evaluation of the cataloging workflow provide recommendations for the improvement and streamlining of processes. - Serve as a resource person for cataloging and acquisitions issues within the Qatar National Library and the cataloging community at large. - Identify training needs in consultation with the Head of Cataloging Department - Implement training programs to staff and other professional librarians - Conduct workshops and seminars to train and develop QNL library staff and others in the community. - Contribute to the profession by publishing, presenting or participation in professional organizations. - Keep abreast of developments, trends and issues in all areas of responsibilities. - Serve on designated committees. - Perform miscellaneous duties and conduct special projects as assigned. - This position includes, but is not limited to, other duties as required and defined by the scope, purpose, and spirit of the institution and are not always indicative of the title and grade of the position.

Additional Info & Requirements

- Master’s degree in Library or Information Science accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent. - Minimum five years of experience in library technical services areas including cataloging - Knowledge of international cataloging standards such as Dewey, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2R) and RDA, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), LCRIs, MARC 21. - Knowledge of digital library standards, technologies and techniques such as OAI/PMH and Z39.50. - Understanding of metadata standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, or METS. - Millennium experience is preferred. - Experience in print and electronic serials cataloging using CONSER standards. - Strong public service commitment to library users. - Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic and multi-cultural environment. - Strong organizational, analytical and communication skills in both oral and written English. - Fluency in oral and written Arabic would be useful. - Ability to be flexible, open-minded and comfortable with changing responsibilities.
