Job Description

The Head of Gulf Collections is responsible for planning, development, promotion, delivery and evaluation of services in the Arab and Islamic Heritage Library and for collections that relate to the GCC area. Activities will include development of the collections, reference, research support, instruction services and community and life long learning programs. As part of the Special Collections and Archives Team, the position will assist the Associate Director for Special Collections and Archives to develop strategic objectives for the department. This position may also act in the absence of the Associate Director for Special Collections and Archives. Regularly scheduled evening and weekend work will be required. Detaled Description - Develop, implement, and evaluate policies, procedures, operational plans and service standards associated with the Arab and Islamic Heritage Collections, other special subject collections related to the GCC, information, reference, research and instruction services, information literacy, collections, exhibits, community and life long learning activities. - Participate in the development, implementation, and assessment of the Qatar Reference Service. - Provide advice and guidance to the team in developing the library collection in all formats; search for, identify, evaluate and select relevant materials through the application of standard library collection development methodologies in conjunction with the Collection Development policy, the Internal Library Collections Committee (this position is a sitting member of the committee) and library procedures. - Lead the special collections team in creating and contributing content to the Qatar National Library website. - Recommend, lead, supervise, and evaluate the departmental staff, Graduate Trainees, and Interns. Provide certified coaching and mentoring to QNDP Trainees, Graduate Trainees, and master’s degree candidates throughout the career development plan process. - Maintain regular interaction with the research and higher education communities and the general public in order to determine user needs assess and integrate information and literacy skills across programs, and provide creative and educational programs. - Assist the Associate Director for Special Collections & Archives to develop strategic objectives, budget, and business plan for information, reference, research, reader’s advisory, instruction services, staff training, programming, and collection management throughout the library. - Keep informed of developments, trends, and issues in all areas of responsibilities. - Contribute to the profession by publishing, presenting, or actively participating in professional organizations. - Serve on designated committees. - Familiarize, understand and implement QF health, safety, and environment policy, procedures, legal regulations and objectives applicable to areas of responsibility. Ensures coordination with HSE department in implementing, monitoring and reviewing of HSE performance to ensure work under his/her control is performed in a safe, healthy and environmentally sound manner. - This position includes, but is not limited to, other duties as required and defined by the scope, purpose, and spirit of the institution and are not always indicative of the title and grade of the position.

Additional Info & Requirements

- Masters degree in Library or Information Science accredited by the American Library Association or foreign equivalent. A second Master’s level degree in an associated degree is preferred. - Minimum 5 years experience, 3 of which must have been in supervisory or leadership role in special collections. - Preference will be given to a native Arabic speaker who is able to communicate, write and present fluently in both Arabic and English (IELTS overall band 6.5 or equivalent)
