Job Description

This position will be primarily working in the Children’s Library to provide temporary support during the Summer Reading Program. Provides children’s reference and readers’ advisory services and collection maintenance duties. Position is primarily scheduled in the Children’s section; however, may be asked to work in other areas of the library as needed Recommends books and assists in the selection of books and reading materials; answers research and reference questions; assists patrons in the use of library catalogs and resource materials; and takes interlibrary loan requests when the Interlibrary Loan Office is closed. Answer telephone calls and provide information or otherwise assist or refer patrons as appropriate. Assists patrons in the use of equipment such as microfilm and microfiche readers, copier machines, CD-ROM workstations, Internet access and Patron Access Catalog (PAC). Provides descriptive cataloging and inputs new books and periodicals into computer system. Perform a variety of miscellaneous duties such as running errands, processing mail, picking up supplies needed for activities, making arrangements for use of library facilities, setting up tables and chairs for classes, etc. Maintain necessary operating records and transactions. Maintains confidentiality of all data and information. Types correspondence, memoranda and other materials; file materials. Perform routine maintenance on books and other materials, such as mending, attaching labels, bar codes and date due slips. Conduct special programs for patrons, as required. Converts and deletes records from computer database. Processes materials for bindery or discard; assists librarians as needed; assists in maintaining the library areas; maintains the vertical file. Assists in the supervision of library aides and clerks in locating reading sources, shelving, and circulation desk responsibilities. Supervises opening and closing of library facility as scheduled. Supervises building and participants by explaining and enforcing program and building rules, regulations, and procedures. Assist in carrying-out special programs, including assistance in scheduling, publicity, refreshments, reservations, setting up, etc. Conduct tours of library facilities for various educational or civic groups and interested individuals. Performs related duties as required.

Additional Info & Requirements

Scheduled approximately 15 hours/week from June to mid-August. Hours vary and include days, evenings and weekends. One year experience in library work or a closely related field requiring extensive public contact in person and on the phone. Preference will be given for experience working with children and families, including library programming.
