Job Description

Requisition #2013-00248. One part time benefitted position in the Young Adult Division within the Library. This class consists of technical and complex sub-profes­sional library work in any one or more of the following areas: Reference, Young Adult, Children’s, or Cataloging. The incumbent works in partnership with other employees, departments/divisions, external entities, and the public in delivering effective and innovative services. Provide holistic services to internal and external customers by seeking ways to integrate programs or services provided by other departments, divisions, and external entities. (Persons hired in this position must be able to perform all the essential tasks required by the position. Works primarily at public service desk: Greet and welcome the public. Provide customer assistance in person or on the phone. Interview patrons and determine information needs; assist patrons in the use of library catalog, databases and resource materials; answer basic reference questions using print and electronic resources; recommend book and other library materials; take inter-library loan requests, meeting room inquiries, and keep statistics. Respond to and resolve routine customer needs that may include location of materials; information regarding library services or programs; interpretation of library policy; instruction in the use of the library catalog, Internet computers & accompanying software and other equipment such as copy machine, microform reader or audio-visual equipment. Set up equipment including sound system, multimedia projector, lap top configuration, TV/DVD/VHS for meetings or events. Refer patrons to other staff as appropriate. Maintain confidentiality of all patron data and information. Assist librarians in collection development and maintenance as needed including weeding, shifting and shelving materials. Assist in maintaining the library areas to include straightening, picking up materials, organizing, re-shelving, or shelf reading. Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Use all required safety equipment. Perform related duties as assigned. Reference and Adult Services: Assist patrons with technical questions concerning the use of Internet computers and accompanying software, databases and electronic resources, reading devices including ebook readers and other mobile devices. Coordinate Adult Services programs or services as assigned including scheduling, registration, publicity, preparations, reservations, distribution of program materials, room set-up and clean up, audience supervision, tracking statistics, etc. Young Adult: Assist teens, parents, and adults who work with teens in providing reference and reader’s advisory service. Plan and staff special programs for teens including the summer reading program. Work closely with teen volunteers and Teen Advisory Board. Create displays, reading lists, and publicity materials for the teen collection. Children’s: Assist children, parents, and adults who work with children by providing reference and reader’s advisory service. Plan and present programs for children of various ages and for families. Create displays, reading lists, and promotional materials. Assist in collection maintenance. Work as a team with Children’s Services staff. Cataloging: Review and match with the item-in-hand the correct CIP information of MARC records created by computer systems, including ITS for Windows, the III cataloging module and remote systems; select classification numbers (Dewey-decimal classification or Local classification) appropriate to the item; create bibliographic records using MARC format and templates; verify author and subject headings; edit records by adding or deleting information to meet library requirements; create item records; check-in materials; create lists of new materials for dissemination; stamp, apply barcodes, and perform other processing tasks as required. Create spine labels and prepare items for processing; train volunteers in processing and repair procedures, check their work, and perform final check for items before they are placed on the shelf. Minimum Qualifications: Training - Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Experience - One year experience in library work or a closely related field requiring extensive public contact in person and on the phone. Position in Young Adult includes a preference for experience working with teens including any library programming. Position in Children’s Services includes a preference for experience working with children and families, including library programming. OR Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the Necessary Applicant Traits. Necessary Special Requirements – Bilingual skills in Spanish and English desirable. New hires must, as a condition of employment pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: oral board, reference checks, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry, drug screen and fingerprint checks through CBI/FBI.
