Job Description

The Kraemer Family Library at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) seeks applications from energetic, innovative librarians for its newly created position, Systems and User Experience Librarian. As a member of the Web Services and Emerging Technology team, this position plays an integral role in administrating the integrated library system (ILS) and supporting other library web services with an emphasis on ensuring functional and accessible end-user design. Other specific responsibilities include enhancing and promoting the online library catalog and other discovery tools, conducting usability testing, exploring new and emerging technologies for improving library services, and training library faculty and staff on catalog enhancements and new technologies. This tenure track position also includes general reference desk duties, library instruction, collection development and liaison duties with selected academic departments, participation in library policy formulation, university and professional service, and research and creative work. Position Responsibilities: Reports to: Director of Web Services and Emerging Technologies Teaching/Librarianship responsibilities are to: 1. Maintain and enhance the integrated library system and other discovery tools with emphasis on the library user interface. This includes, but is not limited to the management, development, and promotion of the online library catalog and other discovery tools. 2. Maintain awareness of integrated library system enhancements and collaborate with library staff to assist in the review/implementation of these updates. 3. Conduct regular assessment and usability tests of the online library catalog and other discovery tools. 4. Communicate with colleagues and library users about changes to the integrated library system or other web services. 5. Serve on the Web Services and Emerging Technologies team to troubleshoot, manage, and enhance library web services and tools. 6. Maintain information resources, such as documentation, on the integrated library system and web services. 7. Explore and implement new/emerging technologies to enhance library services in coordination with the Web Services and Emerging Technologies team. 8. Work with the Archives Librarian and other necessary parties related to developing and maintaining the institutional digital repository. 9. Maintain a working knowledge of library metadata encoding standards (MARC 21, AACR2, RDA, etc.) and basic circulation and cataloging processes. 10. Provide general reference services. (May include nights and weekends) 11. Advise and consult with library workers to maximize effective use of technology; provide training to empower library colleagues to be proficient library technology users. 12. Develop the collections, provide individual, group, or course-related instruction, serve as department liaison, and assist students and faculty in selected subject areas. 13. Contribute to the development and implementation of the information literacy program. Research, service and other responsibilities are to: 14. Participate in the development of library-wide policies, procedures, and goals. 15. Serve on committees, submit reports, and undertake special projects as specified by the Director of Web Services and Emerging Technologies or the Library Dean. 16. Meet the requirements of the tenure track which includes participating in scholarly activities such as research projects, publications, and presentations in addition to providing service to the library, university, and profession.

Requirements: • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school • Experience, coursework, or demonstrated usage of an integrated library system staff modules • Understanding of library data encoding standards such as MARC21, RDA, etc. • Previous participation in web projects, such as managing a website or implementing a web service • Working knowledge of web programming languages such as HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL, etc. • Working knowledge of web usability standards and testing • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Commitment to the teaching/librarianship, research, and service requirements of a tenure-track position • Strong customer service attitude Desired Qualifications: • Experience in management or maintenance of an ILS (specifically Sierra or Millennium) • Experience maintaining a web service, such as a website or web-based tool • Experience managing a web server • Demonstrated ability to create learning materials and provide instruction for colleagues • Understanding of technological trends and developments relevant to academic libraries • Experience working with and assisting library users in finding information (preferably both face-to-face and remotely) in a library setting • Demonstrated ability to document technology

The Community

The Colorado Springs campus of the University of Colorado was established in 1965. The student population is approximately 7650. Most students are commuters, but campus housing is available for about 900 students. Doctoral degrees are offered in engineering, geropsychology, educational leadership and nursing practice. The campus also has graduate programs in business, public administration, and a variety of arts and science areas. Colorado Springs, located at the foot of Pikes Peak, has a population of approximately 500,000, with tourism, high technology, manufacturing, sports and the military ranking as the key industries within the community.
