Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the selection of adult fiction, teen, and children’s materials in both print and e-format for the Library District. These specific selection responsibilities may change as the department reorganizes under new leadership in 2014. The Selection Librarian is the subject matter expert and incorporates Patron Driven Acquisitions to meet the needs of the 21st Century Library collection. This position makes new selection decisions and identifies material for removal. This exempt, full-time position is a member of a highly collaborative team committed to achieving the mission of the Pikes Peak Library District: to seek, engage and transform lives through library services and resources that enrich individual lives and build community. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: • Selects library materials and identifies specific collection needs based upon: o PPLD collection guidelines and policies; o review of materials throughout full-life cycle; o publisher/vendor information; and o patron/staff input or requests • Evaluates current library collection and collection performance and makes collection development recommendations based on data • Evaluates condition of materials and identifies materials that need to be removed from the collection • Monitors assigned acquisitions budgets and makes recommendations for material budget allocations based on department goals and material costs • Creates order lists and identifies vendor sources for materials; works with vendors to solve acquisitions needs • Stays current on developments in the library field, including selection trends related to book publishing, media releases, and technology • Is well read to successfully provide reader’s advisory service

Additional Info & Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: • Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) required • Three plus years of professional experience working in a library required • One year of experience in selection and acquisitions, including selection of adult fiction, teen, and children’s materials, both print and e-format preferred • Applies analytical reasoning and strategic thinking skills to support collection management functions • Understands work flows and initiates process improvement • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to listen to others, and effectively interact with others • Works collaboratively, is open to the ideas of others and builds trust throughout the organization • Simultaneously manages multiple projects • Demonstrates flexibility, tackles challenges and positively adapts to changes • Practices teamwork, demonstrates a “whatever-it-takes” work ethic, and models an excellent customer service attitude. • Bilingual ability is a plus in serving our diverse community.
