Job Description

Status/Schedule: Regular, full-time, 40 hours per week. This position will be scheduled according to the department needs and will include evening and weekend hours. Salary Range: $22.31 - $29.00 per hour starting salary range; $22.31 - $35.69 per hour full salary range. Although the full salary range for this position is provided, offers are typically made within the starting salary range and depend on qualifications. The City and County of Denver benefit package will be offered. Background Information: This is an exciting opportunity to impact children and families in Denver as the leader of the Early Literacy Department. The successful candidate will draw upon his/her extensive knowledge in support of the Denver Public Library’s Community Impact Statement: Children from birth are immersed in literacy–rich environments where they discover the joy of reading and learning, motivating them to achieve and graduate from high school. This position represents Denver Public Library in the early childhood community in Denver and Colorado, which includes leading the work of creating public awareness of early literacy best practices; coordinating website content related to early literacy; developing and implementing services related to early literacy for Denver Public Library including initiating community contacts, organizing the Library’s response and participation and making presentations to relevant parties; overseeing staff who enhance Library storytimes; and managing the highly successful Read Aloud program. In partnership with other entities serving children in the community, this position is critical in sharing the early literacy message with parents and caregivers. Duties and Responsibilities: Ensures high quality early literacy experiences provided by staff. Oversees programs and services for 0-5 year-olds and their adults. Identifies and implements emerging opportunities to move the early literacy goals forward. Directs daily operations of the early literacy department including personnel, scheduling, budgeting and customer service. Communicates effectively with customers, staff and administration. Coordinates department’s work with other library departments and City agencies. Develops relationships and collaborates with community partners around early literacy issues and concerns. Supports a culture of early literacy throughout the community. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of early literacy best practices. Knowledge of the Public Library Association’s ECRR initiatives and the materials/resources that support it. Knowledge of current research in early literacy and child/brain development. Skill in providing strong, fervent and compassionate leadership. Knowledge of basic public relations and marketing principles. Skill in the recruitment, selection, training and motivation of staff. Ability to model a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor. Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to create and maintain positive staff relationships. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups in the Library and in the community. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility. Experience: Three years of experience in providing service to children and families focusing on early literacy within the library or in the community. Proven track record of training, coaching and mentoring professional staff. Proven supervisory and project management experience. Education: A Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program or a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Development, Early Childhood Education or related field required.
