Job Description

The Denver Public Library collects materials, in a variety of popular formats, which support the Library's function as a major source of information for the demanding needs of a metropolitan population. The collection serves the popular and recreational needs of the general public and reflects the racial, ethnic and cultural diversity of the community. The Denver Public Library has a centralized collection development department for a Central Library and 25 branches, with a new branch opening in 2013. The total collection budget for 2014 is $5.2 million.

Duties and Responsibilities:  Provides children’s materials collection development, maintenance and evaluation within established guidelines. Makes selection decisions for children’s materials in multiple formats. Utilizes online vendor selection and ordering tools, print review and other media sources to make purchase decisions. Exercises professional judgment to anticipate demand, address customer and staff requests, and analyze, identify and respond to collection needs. Keeps current on trends affecting children’s collections. Uses data to assess usage and popularity of library materials. Tracks budget through provided reports and makes necessary adjustments. Participates in determining annual budget allocations for library materials. Works collaboratively with librarians throughout the system on collection development and maintenance issues. Assists and/or provides direction to branch staff in weeding and collection maintenance activities.

Knowledge, Skills andAbilities:  Knowledge of the elements that make up a great public library collection. Skill in interpreting data from many sources in analyzing collection needs. Skill in the use of integrated library systems. Skill in analysis, negotiation and problem solving. Skill in operating a computer and using the technology required to perform assigned duties. Ability to work well under pressure and to meet inflexible deadlines. Ability to demonstrate initiative and flexibility. Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity and sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers and community.

Experience:  Two years of post-MLS professional-level work in a library. Experience working with online ordering tools including iPage, Bibz, Overdrive, and Midwest Tapes is preferred.

Education:  A Master’s in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution.

Salary Range:  $22.42 - $29.15 per hour starting salary range; $22.42 - $35.87 per hour full salary range.  Although the full salary range for this position is provided, offers are typically made within the starting salary range and depend on qualifications. The City and County of Denver benefit package will be offered.
