Job Description

Overall Job Objective:

Under general supervision to staff the Library's circulation desks, to provide exceptional customer service, and to perform related duties as required.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. At a public desk, interacts with the public both in person and on the telephone to assist with information needs. This includes, but is not limited to, checking out library materials, working with computerized accounts, researching information in the Library's circulation database, and providing information on the library collection, services, patron computers and programs.

2. Collects fees for lost and overdue materials by cash, check and credit card; is responsible for entering all fees and waived fees into the Library database and cash register, and for maintaining accurate accounting in cash register. Independently determines resolution to disputes over owed fines with patrons.

3. Works with patrons to process new borrower registrations as well as renewals by entering data into a computerized information system.

4. Processes reserved materials to be picked up by patrons.

5. Manages mail processing for all outgoing Library mail.

6. Performs switchboard duties and processes phone renewals.

7. Sorts and organizes a variety of library materials.

8. Assists patrons in answering directional questions.

9. Operates and monitors the Automated Materials Handling Machine as materials are returned. Troubleshoots for any mechanical or computer related problems.  Determines and contacts appropriate staff person when assistance is necessary. Assesses rejected materials and takes appropriate, corrective action to discharge these items.

10. Other:

  • Performs related duties as required to meet the needs of the city.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
  • Responsible for knowing and complying with all city and department policies; participating in professional trainings and development; and adhering to attendance and workplace attire policies.Generally, duties and responsibilities are listed from most to least critical or time consuming.
