Job Description
The Library Technician performs clerical and paraprofessional support work related to the Technical Services functions of the Library. Implements and maintains the cataloging process of material. Maintains the database, handles incoming and outgoing loaned and acquired material, and compiles and maintains statistical reports. Orders and confirms material requested by ordering Librarian. Processes electronic orders for printed and audio/visual material purchases. Handles the receipt of incoming materials by checking invoices and purchase orders, verifying prices, and approving invoices for payment. Catalogs Library materials using online library records. Handles original cataloging by classifying and determining subject headings and other bibliographic information through examination of the book or audiovisual item. Edits and maintains bibliographic database on library’s automated cataloging system. Enters new material on the database to produce bibliographic records. Processes library materials; withdraws, returns, or repairs damaged materials and maintains supply in inventory. Processes inter-library loan requests (ILL) to and from other libraries. Compiles and maintains statistical reports such as daily and monthly circulation reports, daily overdue notices and monthly reports of items added to and withdrawn from the collection. Runs daily circulation and cataloging reports. Provides backup support for Library operations, such as answering phones, checking in mail, and covering the circulation desk. Works with volunteers. Maintains supply inventory and upkeep of technical equipment. Performs other duties as assigned and required.
Additional Info & Requirements
Requires High School education or (GED); Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Preference given to candidates with cataloging experience. Two years of library experience preferred. Must have basic knowledge of library procedures, Dewey Decimal System, library equipment, Internet, cataloging knowledge preferred. Basic computer skills required for accurate data entry and to maintain and run reports. Basic communication skills required to work in a team-oriented environment and interact with vendors. Basic mathematical skills needed to work with Dewey Decimal System. An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.
