Job Description

Do you enjoy working with children and teens?  Do you plan a career working with young people?  Would you like practical work experience in a public library this summer?  Summer is the busiest time in the public library for programs for children and their families.  The Louisville Public Library is looking for an organized, friendly and energetic intern who can take initiative as well as work with a team of Children's Librarians.  This internship allows 15 work hours per week from May 18th through July 17th, and provides the opportunity to work directly with children and teens.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the guidance of Children's Librarians, the summer intern will supervise teen volunteers, present preschool story times, assist with shelving of library materials and creation of props and crafts for story times and summer events.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as lead for a large team of teen volunteers ( assist with interviewing potential volunteers, train teens in group setting, mentor individual teen volunteers) during the Summer Reading Program (SRP).  The intern will both perform these tasks, and supervise teen volunteers as they perform the same.
  • Interact with children and their parents/caregivers, greeting them, explaining the SRP, recognizing reading accomplishments, and awarding prizes for reaching each level of reading hours.
  • Manage computer input of readers’ personal data as well as number of hours read in the program.
  • May suggest reading materials to children or parents, provide information about events of the summer to parents and children.
  • Administer shelf-reading assessment and maintain records of which teens have been training to shelve library materials, assign shelving and shelf-reading tasks to teen volunteers.

ASSIST CHILDREN'S LIBRARIANS

  • In outreach to schools, and by presenting story times for babies, toddlers and preschoolers.
  • In program preparation, setup, and decorating.
  • Preparing crafts for story times and other events.
  • Creating flannel board story pieces or other props to be used in story times and other events.
  • Rove through the Children’s division, assisting patrons with self-checkout, and straightening book shelves and bins.

Additional Info & Requirements

Desire and ability to work with children, teens and adults on a daily basis.

  • Ability to work well with a diverse population.
  • Attention to detail, and ability to complete assigned tasks.
  • Basic computer skills (keyboarding and using a simple online database).
  • Ability to sort alphabetically and numerically.
  • Display initiative to take on additional tasks under direction of Children's Librarians.


TIME COMMITMENT
15 hours/week, from May 18, 2015 through July 17, 2015.

TRAINING PROVIDED
Orientation will occur, to familiarize you with staff, tools and details of program.
