 We’re looking for someone who is passionate about libraries and understands the role they play in promoting family literacy.  With our $4M renovation scheduled for completion this year, we need your help to look at our new children’s and teen spaces with fresh eyes. OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE:

Under general supervision of the Public Services Manager, the Youth Services Manager provides vision, planning and implementation for children and teen services at the Main Library. This position is responsible for the management and coordination of staff scheduling at the youth and teen services desks, story times, special programs, collection maintenance and related outreach services, along with the training, coaching and development of staff. Work is performed with independent judgment and initiative. The Youth Services Manager is charged with modeling quality customer service behaviors which align with the library customer service model and City of Boulder’s vision and values.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Directly supervises, hires, trains and evaluates the children’s and teen staff; and provides direction and support to them in the supervision of volunteers and work-study students. 
  2. Oversees the planning and implementation of library programs for children and teens. Works with the Volunteer Coordinator and Library Programs Specialist on designing and executing special programs. Collaborates with the branch managers and staff to provide quality story time programs and the annual summer reading programs. 
  3. Working collaboratively with the Boulder Reads Manager, coordinates and evaluates outreach and family literacy programs for children and teens. 
  4. Working as a team member with various library workgroups to design, promote, and administer high quality services to the community. Participates in a coordinated effort with the communications staff to present a positive image of the library, and to promote library use. 
  5. Manages the daily work assignments of the children’s and teen staff to ensure that work is performed in an effective, timely and professional manner. This includes but is not limited to, efficient operations of the service desks, story times, and special programs. 
  6. In coordination with the Collection Development Manager, manages collection maintenance for the children’s and teen collections at the Main Library. Consistently implements and follows library best practices for managing children and teen-focused collections. 
  7. In coordination with the Public Services Manager, develops and implements long-range planning for children’s and teen services. 
  8. Directs and models outstanding customer service within the children’s and teen workgroup and throughout the library. Responds directly to customers for unusual and non-routine interactions.
    • Assists library patrons in locating materials, answering questions and providing information regarding library materials and policies.
    • Cooperates and assists individuals and organizations involved in services to children and teens. 
  9. Demonstrates leadership by aggressively pursuing new developments in children’s and teen services and imparts this knowledge to all appropriate staff.
    • Develops and carries out training programs to enhance technical and service knowledge in children and teen services workgroup. 
  10. Maintains records of program participation, compiles data, and prepares statistical reports. Submits such reports according to established deadlines and as otherwise requested. 
  11. Acts as a Person in Charge of Main Library on an as-needed basis.

  • Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property.
