Job Description

Background Info: Become a Senior Librarian in the Burnham-Hoyt Department and bring a fast-paced, materials-rich environment to customers of all ages. This department meets the needs of the library customer who is looking to the library to provide the newest and most popular materials. A strong emphasis will be placed on providing reader’s advisory and reference service in a busy Central Library department. A key role of this position is overseeing positive experiences for library customers by designing, preparing, promoting and evaluating meaningful individual programs and programming series for adults – the Fresh City Life. Duties and Responsibilities: Creates lifelong library customers by implementing and managing library services designed for customers seeking popular materials, quick service and reader/media advisory. Oversees the design of engaging displays. Works with a team of Senior Librarians and a Manager to develop, design, and implement system-wide services. Oversees daily operations of a department including personnel, scheduling and customer service issues. Oversees daily operations of Fresh City Life programs, including managing the program budget. Staffs a busy reference desk, serving a diverse clientele. Communicates effectively about issues and initiatives with customers, staff, and administration. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong leadership and supervisory skills and ability to create and maintain positive staff relationships. Knowledge of publishing trends. Skill in eye-catching display design and merchandizing of library materials. Skill in providing reference, reader and media advisory service. Ability to thrive working in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups. Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, and community. Ability to creatively problem-solve, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility. Ability to select, train, motivate and supervise professional and clerical staff. Experience: Two years of professional work in a library. Experience in providing high volume, innovative library service. Education: A Masters in Library Science from an ALA accredited program.
