Description

The Community Outreach Services Manager Librarian III is responsible for managing and implementing outreach services to the community.  Responsible for creating and implementing a unified, library-wide approach to the delivery of library services directly to the community beyond the library buildings.  Participates in the planning and evaluation of programs, services, and goals for the entire library. Coordinates offsite programming in collaboration with community partners.  Reports to the Assistant Director of Libraries.

Examples of Duties

Essential Community Outreach Services Functions:

Manages outreach services by coordinating and communicating with a staff spread over six days to ensure services are delivered; supervises public services desk in absence of other supervisors; oversees customers and their use of the library and its resources maintaining the appropriate atmosphere and discipline depending upon the area and the customer being served; opens and/or closes and secures library as needed.

Manages the library outreach fleet including bookmobiles and delivery vehicles.

Rewrites policies to address changes in procedures and legislation.

Participates on the planning/design and selection committees for new and renovated buildings.

Coordinates in the selection of the outreach collections.

Attends professional meetings and conferences to keep up with the latest trends in the library field; regularly reviews professional journals for current trends and read book reviews, publishers’ catalogues, and researches other information sources to identify materials to meet customer needs, enrich the library’s collections, and correct deficiencies.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, volunteers, other departments, other libraries, vendors, service providers, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Maintains an awareness of new literature, technologies, trends, and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

Serves as liaison with community groups and identifies and analyzes emerging community issues and needs to determine direction for services and collections.

Additional Info & Requirements

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or closely related field with three to five years of public library experience involving community outreach services, and some supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.  Some library programming experience preferred.  Must possess state Library certification.  Requires a valid driver’s license.
