Job Description

Job Summary: The Instruction and Liaison Librarian reports directly to the Director of Library Services and is responsible for providing information literacy instruction to students, faculty and the community; will work with faculty to build information literacy into programs, courses and assignments; will provide direct instruction to students in classrooms, in labs, online, in workshops and orientations; and will develop course materials and online tutorials. The Instruction and Liaison Librarian will engage in the Library Liaison program by coordinating with faculty and academic administrators to ensure they have the resources needed for student and faculty success and will provide reference and research services for students, staff, faculty, administrators and the community.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties: 

INSTRUCTION: Provide direct instruction to students in classrooms, in labs, online, in workshops, and during orientations to ensure that they receive the information literacy skills needed to find, retrieve, create, analyze and use information. Help faculty build information literacy into programs, courses and assignments. Provide instruction to faculty, staff and administrators through professional development. Participate in peer teaching evaluations. Collaborate with faculty and others to assess student learning outcomes.

LIAISON SERVICES: Participate in the Liaison program, which is a collaboration between Library Services and other areas of the College in order to establish two-way communication; provide Library contacts dedicated to serving needs; increase awareness and use of Library resources and services; increase Library Services’ awareness of and response to the needs of the College; increase awareness of Information Literacy instruction opportunities for Faculty and students and help incorporate them into the curriculum; improve the Library’s planning process; and improve student outcomes. Meet with faculty and administrators from schools, departments and divisions on a regular basis to ensure communication and collaboration. Coordinate with all areas of the library including Content Services, Archives and Digital Resources, Public Services and Administration in order to maintain an understanding of resources and services available and communicate the College’s needs.

DEVELOP INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Work with faculty, instructional designers and others to identify, develop, improve and maintain course materials such as assignments, tutorials, resource guides, and open education resources for use in the classroom, online, in learning management system, in workshops and others contexts. Maintain LibGuides and other resource tools.

REFERENCE AND RESEARCH: Provide reference and research services to students, staff, faculty, and the community. Provide services at the Reference desk. Provide reference help by phone, email, text, chat and other formats.

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT: Participate in materials selection, acquisition, evaluation and removal. Research new information resources and research tools in multiple formats including print, recorded materials, electronic and streaming media. Find, evaluate and provide access to Open Education Resources.

OTHER DUTIES: Participate in Professional development activities.

Minimum Qualifications:  Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution.

Zero (0) to two (2) years of direct, paid, full-time work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:  Two (2) years of instruction and/or library liaison experience in an academic library.

• Familiarity with best practices in teaching and learning
• Familiarity with ACRL standards for Information Literacy in Higher Education
• Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
• Effective organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work under minimal supervision to perform a variety of duties
• Knowledge of SLCC library policies and procedures
• Knowledge of reference materials and resources both online and in print
• Experience with library catalogs, research databases and other library related software
• Familiarity with online education and Learning Management Systems
• Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities and special need.
• Knowledge of instruction that is culturally and linguistically relevant to SLCC’s student population.
• Experience creating assignments, tutorials and other course materials
• Familiarity with Open Education Resources
• Basic understanding of copyright law, fair use, and licensing agreements
•Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
•Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities and special needs.

Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties:  Voluntary participation in campus committees and associations as appropriate.
